What crops are suitable for planting under trees?
In order to make fuller use of land resources, many farmers also plant crops under trees, but not all crops are suitable for planting under trees; planting unsuitable crops will affect the yield, so what crops are suitable for planting under trees?
Crops suitable for planting under trees are mainly divided into three categories: vegetables, food crops and medicinal plants. For vegetables, you can plant garlic chives, water spinach, Ceylon spinach, etc.; for food crops, you can plant broad beans, peanuts, etc.; for medicinal plants, you can plant pinellia, etc., because crops planted under trees need to have the characteristics of “shade tolerance and intolerance of strong light”. Generally, crops with a relatively low plant height and low demand for light conditions can all be planted, and the specific choice depends on the local climate.
1. Vegetables
1. Garlic chives: they like to grow in a cool environment, and high temperatures and strong light will affect their taste, so they are suitable for planting under trees;
2. Water spinach: it is a leafy green vegetable with a relatively short growth cycle and low light requirements; it can grow as long as there is a sufficient supply of water and fertilizer;
3. Ceylon spinach: it is also a leafy green vegetable, and its growth cycle is a little longer than that of water spinach, but it can be harvested continuously; planting it under trees generally does not affect crop growth.
2. Food crops
1. Broad beans: besides being used as food, they can also be used as fertilizer, feed, etc., so they have many uses. At the same time, they are also a shade-tolerant crop and like a half-shade, half-sun growth environment, so planting them under trees is quite suitable.
2. Peanuts: although they can be planted under trees, they also have light requirements; if the tree shade is relatively large and there is no light, it will also affect the peanut yield.
3. Medicinal plants
Pinellia is a shade-tolerant Chinese medicinal material, and its planting benefits are also relatively high. Because the roots of pinellia are relatively short, it needs fairly fertile soil; for example, sandy loam rich in humus is quite suitable.
In short, when planting crops under trees, the most important thing is to choose shade-tolerant crops; next, choose according to the size of the tree shade, light intensity and soil conditions. The crops chosen for different situations are also different.
