Asparagus bean, also known as sea vegetable, Jiangli, thread vegetable, and fa cai, is a wild vegetable with high edible value. It is cultivated in China's coastal areas and Heilongjiang, among other places. Below is an introduction to the cultivation techniques for asparagus bean.

Cultivation Techniques for Asparagus Bean

1. Site Selection and Sowing

For asparagus bean cultivation, deep and fertile soil must be selected, and the land should be loosened and fertilized before planting. Then choose the asparagus bean seeds best suited to the local area and sow them on the prepared plot. On the finely prepared field, first make small furrows about 4 cm deep, then scatter the seeds evenly into the furrows. After sowing, cover with about 2 cm of thin soil, then water the furrows with an appropriate amount of water, and finally cover with plastic film or with withered grass and decomposed fertilizer.

2. Thinning and Weeding

After the seedlings emerge, weeds appearing among the seedlings should be pulled out promptly before they grow large; whenever weeds appear, remove them at any time. Thin the seedlings once after they have all emerged, removing diseased and pest-damaged seedlings; weak seedlings can be transplanted separately or directly thinned out. Along with weeding, you can loosen the soil between rows with a small stick, which benefits growth. When the seedlings reach about 10 cm in height, begin the second thinning. Seedlings growing quickly can be transplanted first into the main field, while the others are left to continue growing. Each thinning should be done after watering to avoid damaging the roots.

3. Fertilizer and Water

After the seeds emerge, water every day to keep them moist. Then, when they grow to 2 to 4 cm, apply diluted human and livestock manure, and also appropriately apply superphosphate and potassium nitrate fertilizer.

4. Pest and Disease Control

During asparagus bean cultivation, pay attention to preventing and controlling aphids, cabbage worms, moths, and other pests, and spray pesticides in advance to do the prevention work well.

When the stems of the asparagus bean seedlings have grown enough, they can be harvested, and thereafter harvested again every 4-5 days.
