I believe everyone is very familiar with ginseng; it is a very precious traditional Chinese medicinal herb, also known as dizhihuangjing, huangshen, shencao, and other names. In TV dramas, you often see people going to gather immortal herbs to heal wounds; besides lingzhi, the most common is ginseng. In China, it often appears under forests dominated by Korean pine in the Northeast region, shaped like the human body, like a little elf. Below, let us take a look at the distribution of ginseng's producing areas and key planting points.

I. Distribution of ginseng's producing areas

In China's history, ginseng producing areas were divided into two major regions. One was the Central Plains producing area, mainly Shangdang, which is today's Shanxi, Hebei, Shandong and other provinces. The other was the Northeast producing area, namely Liaodong, which is today's Jilin, Liaoning and Heilongjiang provinces.

Cultivated ginseng in China is mainly distributed in the area extending along the Changbai Mountains at latitudes between 30 and 40 degrees north, extending north to Yichun in Heilongjiang and starting in the south from Kuandian in Liaoning. Ginseng produced in China's Changbai Mountain area and the Sanjiang One River area is of superior quality.

II. Introduction to the key planting points of ginseng

(1) Key points for site selection

Ginseng is suitable for planting in loose soil rich in organic matter with a thick soil layer, good water and fertilizer retention performance, and flat ground on gentle slopes. The suitable site selection is to choose plots with loam or sandy loam soil, convenient drainage and transportation.

It is not advisable to choose sites with high groundwater levels, low-lying areas, dry ridge paths, or land where herbicides have been used and soybeans, vegetables, melons and fruits have been planted.

Because soil conditions are very important for the growth of ginseng, after selecting a soil block, samples must be taken for testing; only if there are no pesticide residues, heavy metals and other substances can it be used as a planting site.

(2) Bed making

The time for making beds is generally selected from early to mid-October. According to the terrain, ponds are made along the soil slope, and drainage ditches are dug around the ginseng field.

(3) Sowing and transplanting

Seed disinfection measures: use professional agents bought from pharmacies to disinfect the seeds, dry them until they do not stick to the hands, and then sowing can be carried out.

Sowing methods: there are two sowing methods, one is raising seedlings, and the other is direct sowing for goods.

Transplanting key points: one-year-old ginseng should be planted immediately, with a row spacing of 8×20 cm per plant and a soil cover thickness of 3—4 cm.

Disinfection and covering: use special agents to spray-disinfect the bed surface of plots after sowing and transplanting, then cover the bed surface with crushed corn stalks or rice straw, with a thickness of about 3 to 4 cm.

(4) Setting up shade sheds

Generally, double-layer sheds are used for shading. The lower layer is a single-ridge arched shed covered with ginseng film to prevent rain, while the upper layer is pulled up with a layer of shade net to regulate light.

(5) Field management

1. Weeding: generally manual weeding is used, and chemical weeding should be avoided as much as possible.

2. Water: in ordinary years, farmland ginseng beds are not short of water. If water is needed, water manually rather than mechanically.

3. Fertilization: 1-2 year old ginseng must be appropriately sprayed with foliar fertilizer, while 3-year-old ginseng needs additional farmyard manure, inorganic fertilizer, etc. to meet its growth needs.
