Planting Time and Flower Promotion Techniques for Shiranui Mandarin
Shiranui mandarin is a mandarin variety with relatively small fruit but a very sweet taste. It is deeply loved by consumers in the market, especially during the Chinese New Year period, when it is often used as a fruit to entertain guests. In recent years, the planting benefits of Shiranui mandarin have improved somewhat. Below, let us understand together when is Shiranui mandarin generally planted? What are the key points of flower promotion techniques?
I. Planting time and methods for Shiranui mandarin
(1) Planting time
The general principle is to plant after the previous flush has matured and before the new flush begins to bud. The whole year is generally divided into three planting periods:
Spring planting: choose to plant in April and May, when there is plenty of rain and the climate is warm. The mandarin trees are more likely to survive and also grow quickly. Therefore, in places with relatively dry and water-deficient autumn and winter and low temperatures, spring planting can be chosen.
Autumn planting: generally from September to November after the autumn flush has matured, when irrigation water is available. Especially in relatively cold places with severe drought and early cold winds and frost, planting at this time should be done as early as possible; planting before mid-October is most beneficial to its growth.
Winter planting: generally choose January and February, when the cold is gradually leaving and the climate begins to warm. Planting before the branches and tips begin to sprout is greatly beneficial to root growth. At this time, new roots grow relatively quickly, and the survival rate is also relatively high.
(2) Planting methods
Generally two people work together to plant seedlings: one person covers the root crown with fine soil, and the other supports the seedling and firms the soil. To make the roots fit tightly with the soil, sufficient water must be irrigated; at the same time, the person covering the soil should also mound the soil into a copper-plate shape and cover it with a layer of weeds to retain moisture.
If there is insufficient rain, it should be irrigated regularly to keep the soil moist, generally once every three or four days, until the plant takes root and survives.
One week after planting, wooden sticks or bamboo poles can be used to support and fix it to ensure survival. After planting, some branches and leaves can be properly pruned to increase the survival rate.
II. What are the key points of flower promotion techniques for Shiranui mandarin?
1. Proper additional fertilisation and fertiliser control with water restriction
The autumn flush is the mother branch most suitable for fruiting. After it turns green, appropriately increase fertiliser to promote nutrient accumulation, and at the same time appropriately control fertiliser and restrict water to prevent winter flush sprouting and reduce the consumption of plant nutrients.
2. Flower promotion by ringing
From mid-October to mid-to-late November, according to weather conditions, ringing and pruning can be carried out on the branches of fruit trees with luxuriant branches and leaves or fruit trees that have previously borne few flowers and fruits, to prevent nutrients in the tree from flowing downward, so that the upper part of the tree accumulates more nutrients, thereby promoting flower bud differentiation and increasing the fruiting rate.
Ringing requires a specially made ringing knife to make one cut around the trunk and branches. It is used to cut through the cortex, but must not damage the xylem. At the same time, after ringing, pay attention to additional fertilisation, and do not use pesticides so as not to harm the fruit tree and cause leaf drop and reduced yield.
3. Spraying paclobutrazol to promote flowering
From mid-October to early December, paclobutrazol can be sprayed to reduce nutrient consumption, ensure flower bud differentiation, and thereby achieve increased yield.
