Atrazine is a systemic selective pre-emergence and post-emergence soil-sealing herbicide, mainly absorbed by the roots of weeds, and after rain it can reach deeper soil layers. So, what weeds does atrazine kill?

1. What weeds does atrazine kill?

It has a fairly broad weed-killing spectrum and can control many annual grass and broadleaf weeds. It is suitable for dryland crops such as corn, sorghum, sugarcane, fruit trees, nurseries and forest land, controlling crabgrass, barnyardgrass, foxtail, sedge, shortawn foxtail, smartweed, lambsquarters, cruciferous and leguminous weeds, and it also has a certain inhibitory effect on some perennial weeds.

2. How to use atrazine

1. Corn fields

For summer corn, apply the herbicide after sowing and before emergence. In North China, Shandong and other places where soil organic matter is 1%-2%, use 150-200 grams of 50% wettable powder per mu, or 175-200 milliliters of 40% suspension concentrate; in Northeast China where soil organic matter content is greater than 3%-6%, use 200-250 grams of 50% wettable powder per mu, or 200-250 grams of 40% suspension concentrate. Use the lower limit for sandy soil and the upper limit for clay soil. Within 1-3 days after sowing, mix with 30 kg of water and spray evenly over the soil surface. When applying after corn emergence, the suitable period is the 4-leaf stage of corn and the 2-3 leaf stage of weeds; for sandy soil with low organic matter content, use 200-250 grams of 50% wettable powder or 40% suspension concentrate per mu. Mix with 30-50 kg of water and spray. For spring corn, use 200-250 milliliters of 40% suspension concentrate per mu, add 30-50 kg of water, spray on the soil surface after sowing and before emergence, and after application in spring drought, mix into the soil or irrigate appropriately. Or treat the stems and leaves at the 4-leaf stage of corn. In areas where corn and winter wheat are grown in succession, to reduce or eliminate the phytotoxicity of atrazine to wheat, atrazine can be used in reduced amounts mixed with cyanazine, alachlor, metolachlor, 2,4-D butyl ester, bentazon and chlortoluron herbicides.

2. Sugarcane fields

5-7 days after planting sugarcane, when some weeds have emerged, use 200-250 grams of 50% wettable powder or 40% suspension concentrate per mu, add 30 kg of water, and spray evenly over the ground surface.

3. Tea gardens, orchards, vineyards

In April-May, during the peak period of weed germination in the field, first remove the large emerged weeds and overwintering weeds, then use 250-300 grams of 40% suspension concentrate per mu, mix with 40 kg of water, and spray evenly over the soil surface.

Atrazine is a pre-emergence soil-treatment herbicide, and can also be used as a post-emergence stem-and-leaf treatment, but it easily causes phytotoxicity. During use, drought has a relatively large impact on its efficacy. It mainly acts on dicotyledonous plants and focuses on soil sealing, so its effect on large weeds is relatively unsatisfactory. Therefore, everyone should use it according to the actual situation.
