Tomatoes are both rich in nutrients and have an adorable bright red appearance. Sometimes we see that some tomatoes have a pointed tip, so why do tomatoes have a pointed tip?

1. Why do tomatoes have a pointed tip?

A pointed tomato is mainly caused by two reasons. The first is the variety: some varieties have a tall round shape, and during growth they may become deformed and grow a pointed tip. The second is hormones: to increase yield, growth hormones are needed during the cultivation of tomatoes. One is 2,4-D, used to dab the flowers to prevent blossom and fruit drop; the other is the commonly used ripening agent ethephon. Eaten in appropriate amounts, it will not harm the human body.

2. The nutritional value of tomatoes

1. The organic acids in tomatoes, such as malic acid and citric acid, also help increase the acidity of gastric juice, aid digestion, and regulate gastrointestinal function.

2. Tomatoes are rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, as well as carotene and various elements such as calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper and iodine. They also contain protein, sugars, organic acids and cellulose.

3. Tomatoes contain fruit acids, which can lower cholesterol levels and are very beneficial for hyperlipidemia.

4. The “tomato lycopene” contained in tomatoes has an antibacterial effect; the malic acid, citric acid and sugars they contain have a digestive-aiding function.

3. Dietary taboos for tomatoes

1. It is not advisable to eat them raw, especially for people with a weak and cold spleen and stomach, and for women during menstruation. If tomatoes are eaten only as a fruit to supplement vitamin C, or to clear summer heat in midsummer, then eating them raw is best.

2. It is not advisable to eat them on an empty stomach. When the stomach is empty, gastric acid secretion increases, and because some chemical substances contained in tomatoes easily combine with gastric acid to form water-insoluble masses, eating them often causes abdominal pain, stomach discomfort and bloating pain.

3. It is not advisable to eat unripe green tomatoes, because they contain the toxic solanine. Eating unripe green tomatoes will taste bitter and astringent; eating many of them can, in severe cases, lead to poisoning, with symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, general discomfort, vomiting and whole-body fatigue, and in serious cases can even endanger life.

4. It is not advisable to heat them at high temperature for a long time, because lycopene easily breaks down when exposed to light, heat and oxygen, losing its health benefits. Therefore, prolonged high-temperature heating should be avoided during cooking.

Although pointed tomatoes are relatively lacking in nutrition and taste, eating them will not cause poisoning or cancer.
