How to Grow Potted Grapes: A Detailed Guide to the Key Growing Techniques

General News By Sophie Bennett 0 views
Grapes can also be grown in pots. Planting them on a balcony or in a courtyard not only beautifies the living environment but also provides people with fresh fruit. Below is a share of potted grape growing techniques. 1. Choosing a pot: Any pot that is hard in texture, drains and breathes well, is slightly large in size, and can hold a good amount of nutrient soil will do. The pot should not be too large; an unglazed clay pot with a diameter of 35-45cm and a depth of 25-35cm is ideal. After choosing it, soak it in bleaching powder, then take it out and rinse and soak it in clean water so it absorbs enough water, then dry it in the sun.

1. Choosing a pot

Any pot that is hard in texture, drains and breathes well, is slightly large in size, and can hold a good amount of nutrient soil will do. The pot should not be too large; an unglazed clay pot with a diameter of 35-45cm and a depth of 25-35cm is ideal. After choosing it, soak it in bleaching powder, then take it out and rinse and soak it in clean water so it absorbs enough water, then dry it in the sun.

2. Potting soil

The potting soil should be loose, fertile, permeable, moisture-retaining, airy and nutrient-rich. It is made by mixing soil with fertilizer, with a soil-to-fertilizer ratio of 7:3. Humus soil is ideal; you can also use a blend of 40% garden soil, 40% leaf mold and 20% sand. Commonly used fertilizers include rotted horse manure, sheep manure, chicken manure or barnyard manure. It is even better if a small amount of bone meal or phosphate fertilizer can be added.

3. Planting

Choose a strong 1-year-old grape seedling with a well-developed root system, thick vigorous canes, plump buds and no pests or diseases, and soak it in clean water for 24 hours before planting. When planting, fill 1/3 to 1/2 of the pot with soil and shape it into a mound. Spread the roots of the grape seedling out on the soil with the root crown upright and centered, then cover with soil. After covering with soil, lift the seedling gently, then firm the potting soil, continue filling with soil to nine-tenths full, level the soil, and water to settle the roots.

4. Watering

In early spring, water once every 2-3 days; in summer, water once every other day or once a day; in autumn, control water appropriately; during the overwintering period, water once a month or not at all. Water thoroughly, not just enough to wet the surface while leaving the lower layer dry. Do not water too much, to avoid wasting water and nutrients. The difference between the water temperature and the pot temperature should not exceed 5°C.

5. Fertilizing

In the year of planting, after budding, apply cake fertilizer water once every 15 days; after leaves unfold, begin foliar feeding, spraying a mixed solution of urea and monopotassium phosphate once every 20 days. For grapes that have already fruited, apply a mixed solution of cake fertilizer water and urea solution twice before budding; from budding to fruit set, apply cake fertilizer water once every 10 days; from fruit set to leaf fall, apply cake fertilizer water and compound fertilizer alternately once every 5 days, about 10 times each.

6. Loosening the soil

Potted grape soil tends to become compacted, so loosen the soil regularly, but not too deep, to avoid damaging the young roots.

7. Building a trellis

Grapes are climbing plants and need a trellis. Set a 1.2-1.5m long wooden pole or bamboo pole in the center of the pot, and simply select 1 of the current year's main canes and tie it to the main pole.

8. Pruning

To improve the fruit set rate and berry quality, thin flowers, thin fruit, thin branches and pinch the growing tips, and at the same time promptly remove tendrils.

9. Pest and disease control

In hot, rainy seasons, pests and diseases such as powdery mildew, downy mildew and red spider mites can occur. If pests or diseases occur, spray lime sulfur mixture at 0.2-0.3 degrees Baume.
