The rubber plant is also known as the Indian rubber tree or Indian rubber fig. In China, it is mostly found in the higher-altitude areas of Yunnan. Nowadays, the rubber plant is commonly grown in pots indoors or in courtyards, serving to accent the home environment, especially in northern regions. Below, let us take a look at the rubber plant's growing methods and precautions.

1. Soil Conditions

When growing a rubber plant, it is best to choose a soil that is loose, well-draining, and slightly acidic. If growing the rubber plant in a pot, choose a soil mixed from leaf mold, garden soil, and sand. It is best to add a certain amount of base fertilizer, as this is more beneficial to the growth of the rubber plant. Generally speaking, the pot should be repotted once every two years.

2. Temperature Conditions

The rubber plant is a tree that likes to grow in high-temperature environments. It grows very quickly, especially in summer and autumn, because the temperature at this time is mostly between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. In winter, if the temperature falls below 5 degrees Celsius, it will stop growing, so attention must be paid to cold protection and frost protection.

3. Light Conditions

The rubber plant is a potted plant that likes light, but it can also grow in a shaded environment. If kept indoors in a pot, it must receive no less than four hours of light. If conditions allow, maintain all-day sunlight, for example by using a fluorescent lamp in place of sunlight.

4. Watering Method

The rubber plant is a plant that likes moisture but cannot be overly moist, and it is not tolerant of drought either. Therefore, watering should be decided according to the moisture level of the potting soil and the season. Generally, in spring and autumn, water once every two to three days; in summer, when the temperature is high, water every day. You can also spray water around the leaves to achieve the effect of lowering the temperature and increasing air humidity. In winter, when the temperature is relatively low, just try to keep the potting soil moist but on the dry side.

5. Fertilizing Method

When growing the rubber plant in a pot, giving enough base fertilizer is far from sufficient, because it is a foliage plant that loves fertilizer, so during its vigorous growth period it also needs appropriate additional fertilizer. However, do not apply nitrogen fertilizer, to avoid overly large leaf spacing and leggy growth, which would make the overall shape unattractive. If you want to control the height of a potted rubber plant, you can apply a mixed liquid fertilizer during its growth period, generally once every 2 months.

6. Pruning Work

Potted rubber plants also need pruning, mainly to give the whole plant good light penetration and an attractive shape. After each pruning, use clay to seal the cut or apply a layer of charcoal powder, so as to prevent the sap from flowing out and causing the whole plant to wither and die.

7. Other Precautions

When caring for a potted rubber plant in normal times, regularly turn the direction of the leaves, so as to avoid asymmetrical growth of the whole plant and an unattractive appearance.

In normal times, pay attention to changing the soil of the potted rubber plant, to avoid phenomena such as soil compaction and poor aeration, which would cause the rubber plant to develop yellowing leaves, death, and similar problems.
