When do Yunnan pomegranates generally ripen?
Yunnan Mengzi pomegranates ripen around August, and those picked in mid-to-late August have the sweetest flavor. Mengzi is located on the low-latitude plateau of Yunnan, with a subtropical plateau monsoon climate, a frost-free period of up to 337 days, and an average annual sunshine duration of 2234h.
The unique natural environment of the Yunnan region provides favorable growing conditions for sweet pomegranates, creating the excellent qualities of Mengzi sweet pomegranates: large fruit, thin skin, plump arils, soft seeds, abundant juice, and sweet flavor. Mengzi sweet pomegranates are not only good in quality but also rich in nutrients, containing fat, vitamins, and a large amount of trace elements, making them extremely beneficial to the human body.
I. Cultivation Methods of Yunnan Mengzi Pomegranates
1. Orchard establishment
Pomegranates do not have very high requirements for soil conditions, with the most suitable pH range being 6.5 to 7.5. They grow and develop relatively well in loose, fertile, well-drained calcareous soil and sandy loam soil. Soil conditions have an obvious effect on fruit quality and yield, so try to choose an area with sufficient sunlight, a relatively low groundwater level, where cold air does not easily stagnate, with good irrigation conditions, far from factories and with no pollution sources, and with convenient transportation for establishing the orchard.
2. Cultivation preparation
Do the planning well: for the selection of the cultivation area, the selected area should have a water storage tank, drainage ditches, an incineration pit, and a manure storage pit, with a size convenient for management.
Arrange the irrigation pipes well to facilitate irrigation: the plant and row spacing should be planned according to the actual terrain and the planted variety. The depth and width of the planting pit are both 60 to 80cm, and each planting pit needs 25 to 50kg of decomposed farmyard manure applied as base fertilizer, after which the soil is backfilled into the pit.
3. Sowing
The best time for sowing is spring, from February to March. To improve the germination rate and ensure the seeds germinate early, before sowing the seeds need to be soaked in 40℃ warm water for 6 to 8h, and sown after the seed coat swells. The soaked seeds are sown in cultivation soil, with a row spacing of about 25cm, and the covering soil thickness is about 1 to 1.5cm. Water once until thoroughly watered.
4. Field planting
For planting stock, choose seedlings that grow vigorously, are of a pure variety, and have no obvious pests or diseases. Nutrition bag seedlings can be planted all year round, while the best planting time for non-nutrition bag seedlings is late autumn to early winter, from October to the end of November. At this time the transplant recovery period is short, and after spring begins they can quickly sprout and send out shoots. When planting, a small number of pollinizer trees should be included. Seedlings should not be planted too deep; the suitable height is level with the ground after watering to settle the roots. After planting and watering, cover the tree disk with rice straw or plastic film.
