How to Grow Panax notoginseng

1. Land preparation and fertilisation

For growing Panax notoginseng, you can choose humus-rich soil or sandy soil or loam; it is not suitable for growing in heavy clay soil. At the same time, the planting site must not be a plot whose previous crop was a solanaceous crop, and the planting site must be left vacant for at least one year before planting. During land preparation, deep ploughing is required, and before planting the soil needs to be disinfected and sterilised. Use about five thousand jin of decomposed farmyard manure per mu as base fertiliser, then make the beds and dig the drainage ditches.

2. Sowing and raising seedlings

Sow in October or November each year. Before sowing, the seeds of Panax notoginseng need to be screened, and the seeds should be disinfected with Xin Gao Zhi Mo (new high-fat film), which can increase the germination rate of the seeds and also isolate viruses. Sowing is generally done by dibbling with a row spacing of six centimetres and a plant spacing of about five centimetres, and finally a layer of rice straw needs to be spread on top, which can maintain soil moisture and also have an insulating effect.

3. Seedling stage management

The main things to pay attention to in seedling stage management are field water management and weeding. When the weather is relatively dry, watering should be done frequently. Secondly, when there is more rain, the field drainage system should be cleared in time to drain the water, and then weeding should be carried out regularly, generally by manual pulling of weeds.

4. Pest and disease control

The most common pests and diseases of Panax notoginseng are damping-off disease, anthracnose, root rot, as well as aphids and scale insects. For the series of fungal infection diseases caused by excessive field moisture combined with relatively high temperatures, Bordeaux mixture or chlorothalonil or carbendazim can usually be used for control, while for aphids and scale insects we can use dimethoate emulsion for control.
