A detailed guide to growing green soybean sprouts, easy for beginners too
Green soybean is a type of soybean with a green seed coat; the beans inside can be eaten and can also be grown into green soybean sprouts. Green soybean sprouts are a fairly popular sprout vegetable, crisp and tender to eat, with high nutritional value. Below is an introduction to the growing method for green soybean sprouts.
1. Seed selection
Choose bean seeds that are plump and free of pests and diseases. You can soak them in clean water and use the water-flotation method to remove poor-quality, not plump, moldy, and insect-damaged beans; what remains are the good bean seeds.
2. Germination
Soak the bean seeds in warm water at 20-30°C to germinate. The higher the temperature, the faster the germination; the lower the temperature, the slower the germination. In summer the germination time is shortened, and in winter the germination time is lengthened. At a temperature of 20-25°C, the seeds need 1-2 days to show white sprouts.
3. Sowing
First prepare a seedling tray, with a size of about 56×40×16 cm. Line the tray with a growing medium that is airy, loose, and rich in organic matter. Sow the green soybean seeds that have shown white sprouts into the medium, water them, and then cover with a thin layer of medium.
4. Environment
Green soybean sprouts should avoid direct sunlight during growth. They can be placed indoors or in a greenhouse, with just a small amount of scattered light. If the light is too strong, the sprouts will grow leggy, their texture will become tough, and the quality will be affected.
5. Misting
After the green soybean seeds are sown, keep the medium moist and wait for them to sprout. During the growth period of the green soybean sprouts, mist them 2-3 times a day; mist more in summer and less in winter, and keep indoor humidity at around 85%.
6. Harvesting
The green soybean sprouts grow quickly, and when they reach about 18 cm, they can be harvested. When harvesting, cut them at the base of the stem. After a few days, new green soybean sprouts will grow out again.
