Gardenia is a common flower in China, with a strong fragrance and good looks. It can not only be used as an ornamental plant, but also made into tea and steeped in water to drink. Many people currently like to keep a pot at home, and if you want to grow gardenias well, you need to prune them properly. So when is the best time to prune gardenia? How do you prune it?

I. Introduction to Gardenia:

1. Is gardenia toxic?

Gardenia is not toxic. It is an evergreen shrub with very lush branches and leaves, and its flowers have a scent similar to milk, with a rich fragrance. Not only is it non-toxic, it also has a certain air-purifying effect and a faint fresh fragrance. You can safely plant it indoors, or place it in a study or office, where it also serves a decorative purpose. Because its fragrance is rich and aromatic, its flowers can be used to make perfume.

2. What varieties of gardenia are there?

Large-leaf gardenia, water gardenia, yellow gardenia, ovate-leaf gardenia, narrow-leaf gardenia, variegated-leaf gardenia, small-leaf gardenia, and Yuhua lotus.

II. When is the best time to prune gardenia?

Gardenia is generally pruned in two periods each year, one in summer from May to July, and the other in December in winter. These two periods fall in the growing season and the dormant season of gardenia respectively. There is not much to prune either; simply cut off the last few pairs of leaves at the end of each branch, and at the same time trim off spent flowers and dead leaves. Gardenia has weak disease resistance, so to prevent wound infection after pruning, we recommend spraying a certain amount of diluted chlorothalonil after pruning, and the concentration should not be too high.

III. How do you prune gardenia?

1. Bud pinching and shoot removal

Bud pinching means cutting off newly sprouted buds or flower buds. Shoot removal means cutting off a branch that appears in an inappropriate place. The purpose of both bud pinching and shoot removal is to reduce nutrient consumption and improve the plant's light, water, and fertilizer conditions.

2. Pinching and tip pruning

Pinching means cutting off the top 2-3 cm of the gardenia's shoots, which can promote the growth of new branches. Tip pruning means cutting back the branches when they become woody.

3. Leaf thinning and flower removal

This point is also the easiest to understand. We only need to cut off a moderate amount of leaves when the gardenia grows too densely, which can increase light penetration and ventilation for the whole plant. Flower removal means cutting off the flowers promptly after they fade, so as to avoid consuming more nutrients.

Overall, gardenia is generally best pruned from May to July or in December. When pruning, you only need to remove flower buds, newly sprouted shoots, and so on.
