What Kind of Plant Is Spirogyra? A Detailed Explanation of Its Morphological Characteristics and Growth Habits
Spirogyra is an aquatic algae plant of the genus Spirogyra in the family Zygnemataceae, also called water moss. It mostly grows in freshwater, distributed in ponds, ditches, rivers, lakes, rice paddies and other still water bodies rich in organic matter. When thriving, it grows in large patches on the bottom, or floats on the water surface in large clumps, and its overall color is green, with a slimy, slippery feel to the touch. It can serve as food for certain fish, and can also be used as medicine, with the effect of clearing heat and detoxifying.
Spirogyra is also harmful, and its harms are as follows:
1. Hindering growth
If Spirogyra grows on the water surface, it will hinder the temperature requirements for the growth of rice and lotus roots, lowering the water temperature and mud temperature, which is unfavorable to the growth of the plants or aquaculture products. If Spirogyra multiplies in large amounts and covers the bottom of the pond, it will entangle farmed fish, shrimp, crabs and so on, affecting their foraging and thereby reducing the survival rate; after decay and decomposition, it will consume dissolved oxygen in the water, causing fish, shrimp, crabs and so on to die from lack of oxygen.
2. Causing diseases
If Spirogyra grows on the water surface, it competes for nutrients and consumes oxygen, causing the roots of rice and lotus roots to suffer from poor gas exchange, producing hydrogen sulfide and biogas that poison the rice, leading to physiological diseases such as blackened roots and root rot; if it attaches to the plants, it will make the plant surface moist, hinder the permeability of the plants, lead to poor respiration, and cause certain diseases.
3. Water quality deterioration
If Spirogyra grows too much, it will give the water a musty and foul smell, reducing the quality of the water; and the large amount of growing and reproducing Spirogyra forms a layer of green scum on the water surface, which will make the water quality turbid and significantly reduce transparency; Spirogyra can also secrete and release toxic and harmful substances, lowering the quality of the water.
