How Many Times a Year Does the Belgian Azalea Bloom? A Detailed Guide to Blooming Frequency and Blooming Period
The Belgian azalea was introduced to our country from Belgium. It is the most beautiful category among azaleas and one of the main types in the world's potted flower production. So, how many times a year does the Belgian azalea bloom?
1. How many times a year does the Belgian azalea bloom?
The Belgian azalea produces flower buds and blooms multiple times a year, with flowers in all four seasons, but the flowers are most abundant in spring. Early varieties bloom in October, while mid-to-late varieties bloom around the Spring Festival, with the blooming period lasting about half a year.
2. Cultivation Techniques for the Belgian Azalea
1. Watering
It is best to water in the morning and evening. In the hot summer, it is not advisable to water at noon; watering at this time is actually harmful, because after the roots of the flower are stimulated by the sudden cold water, the plant will be damaged. Watering should follow a few principles: do not water if the soil is not dry; once the soil is found to be dry and pale, water it thoroughly; never get into the habit of watering only halfway.
In spring and autumn, watering should be increased appropriately, because this is the period of growth, blooming and bud development for the azalea, and the water supply must keep up with its growth rhythm. However, do not water excessively; too much water will make the flowers wither prematurely. During the growing season, watering once every 3 days is sufficient. In summer, when new branches sprout, more water is consumed, and because the air is dry and the temperature is high, 1-2 full waterings are needed every day. If it does not rain for several days in a row and the potting soil becomes dry, we should spray more water on the ground around the pot, which can increase the surrounding air humidity.
After the beginning of autumn, the temperature is a bit low, the air is relatively dry, and evaporation is also high, so the potting soil should be watered frequently to keep it moist. After the flower pot is brought indoors in October, the amount of watering should be gradually reduced.
2. Light
The Belgian azalea prefers warm and bright conditions, but it must not be placed in a scorching environment. The optimal growing temperature is kept at 12-25 degrees, with 18-25 degrees being optimal from April to September, and 12-8 degrees being optimal by March of the following year. For the soil, choose a looser leaf mold, preferably slightly acidic soil.
3. Applying Fertilizer
During the growth period of the Belgian azalea, apply fertilizer once every half month. The root system of the azalea is very fine, so the fertilizer concentration must not be too high; otherwise, the plant will not only be unable to absorb it, but the branches and leaves will also become scorched, and it may even die. In winter, the temperature must not be lower than 15 degrees, otherwise it will affect the plant's growth. In summer, fertilization should be stopped due to the high temperatures.
4. Replacing Potting Soil
There is no need to replace the potting soil every year; replace it once every two to three years. Try not to damage the roots, and you can replace it together with a ball of soil. The timing is after the flowers fade or in autumn.
The Belgian azalea not only has beautiful flowers, but is also not difficult to grow; you just need to pay extra attention when watering.
