River sand can be used. Alkaline substrate sand, or substrate sand used for saltwater tanks, cannot. When choosing river sand, pay attention to the particle size being between 1~3MM, not too coarse or too fine, otherwise it is not good for the growth of aquatic plants and the cleaning of the tank.

River sand is a non-metallic ore formed from natural stone under natural conditions through long-term repeated collision and friction caused by the force of water; its composition is relatively complex, its surface has a certain smoothness, and it has a high content of impurities. River sand particles are round and smooth, relatively clean, widely available, and odorless. It has little effect on water quality and can be used as substrate sand for growing general aquatic plants. Before laying it, it must be strictly washed clean with clean water; after washing clean, it should also be soaked in salt water or potassium permanganate solution for disinfection, and only after thorough cleaning can it be used.

For growing aquatic plants in a fish tank, it is best to use 4*6 ceramic pellets or gravel, which are easy to clean of dirt and wash.
