Polygonatum Planting Techniques and Cultivation Management Key Points
Polygonatum is a Chinese herbal medicine with the effects of moistening the lungs and tonifying qi, strengthening the spleen and nourishing yin. Many people are growing Polygonatum. What are the Polygonatum planting techniques and cultivation management?
Polygonatum Planting Techniques and Cultivation Management
1. Site Selection and Land Preparation
Choose a plot that is moist and has sufficient shade conditions, and the soil should preferably be loam or sandy loam with a loose texture and good water retention. Before sowing, carry out soil plowing, rake finely and level, and make beds.
2. Planting Methods
(1) Rhizome propagation: Rhizome propagation is generally used. Select plump rhizomes with buds from the current year or two-year-old plants as the parent material, cut them into several sections with a knife, and plant them in the prepared beds. After planting, cover with soil 3-5 cm and press lightly and water. For planting in late autumn, after the ground freezes, cover with some livestock manure or barnyard manure to help keep warm and survive the winter.
(2) Seed propagation: Sow evenly in shallow furrows on the bed surface at a row spacing of 12-15 cm, cover with about 1.5 cm of soil, press lightly and water, and cover with a layer of grass. Remove the covering grass before emergence. When the seedlings are 6-9 cm tall, thin them appropriately where they are too dense, and transplant after 1 year. To satisfy the shade-loving growth habit of Polygonatum, corn can be planted on the bed ridges.
3. Cultivation Management
In the early stage of Polygonatum growth, cultivation and weeding should be carried out frequently, and hilling up can be done when necessary; in the later stage, pulling weeds is sufficient. If drought occurs or it is planted in a relatively sunny and dry place, timely watering is needed. After cultivation, apply human and livestock manure water and a small amount of chemical fertilizers such as urea, and after weeding, apply farmyard manure, phosphate fertilizer and oilseed cake.
4. Pest and Disease Control
(1) Diseases: The main diseases are black spot disease and leaf spot disease. Bordeaux mixture, zineb wettable powder, etc. can be used for control.
(2) Pests: The main pest is white grub larvae. They bite off seedlings or gnaw on seedling roots. 75% phoxim emulsifiable concentrate or other insecticides can be used.
5. Harvesting
The rhizomes harvested in late autumn and early winter are plump and full, with the best quality. After digging out, remove the stems and leaves, wash clean of mud and sand, remove the fibrous roots, and the larger and longer Polygonatum can be divided into 2 or 3 sections. Place in a steamer or wooden rice steamer and steam until they appear oily and glossy, then take out and sun-dry or oven-dry.
During the Polygonatum planting process, pay attention to water irrigation and avoid water accumulation. Interested friends can further consult relevant people for more detailed understanding.
