How Many Times a Year Does an Osmanthus Tree Bloom? A Detailed Guide to Its Blooming Cycle
Different varieties of osmanthus trees bloom a different number of times. Generally, Jingu (golden osmanthus), Yingu (silver osmanthus) and Dangu (red osmanthus) bloom once a year, mainly around the eighth month of the lunar calendar; whereas Sijigui (four-season osmanthus) can bloom multiple times a year, and varieties like Rixianggui bloom almost continuously. So how should osmanthus be grown to bloom better? Below, the editors of Tuliu.com introduce them to you one by one.
How to grow an osmanthus tree?
1. Fertilizer management
When planting, add a little organic fertilizer and compound fertilizer. Generally, apply nitrogen fertilizer once in spring, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer once in summer, and overwintering organic fertilizer once before winter sets in, mainly decomposed cake fertilizer and barnyard manure.
2. Watering management
Generally, water once every 3-4 days in spring and autumn, once every 1-2 days in summer, and once every 7-10 days in winter. In addition, the water temperature for watering osmanthus should be close to the soil temperature; if the difference between the two is too great, it will damage the flower's root system. When watering potted plants, be careful not to let water accumulate.
3. Light and temperature
In areas south of the Yellow River basin, it can be grown outdoors and overwinter there. Potted plants should be moved indoors in winter and placed in a sunny spot so they receive plenty of direct sunlight, with the room temperature kept above 5°C but not exceeding 10°C.
4. Shaping and pruning
It depends on the tree; based on the tree's shape, set the main framework well, and remove other root suckers, overly dense branches, leggy branches, crossing branches, and diseased or weak branches to improve ventilation and light penetration.
5. Pest and disease control
During care, pay attention to preventing and controlling the invasion of osmanthus brown spot disease, osmanthus blight, osmanthus anthracnose, red spiders and other pests and diseases, and take preventive measures in advance. Once a disease is found, deal with it promptly.
