How Many Times a Year Does Osmanthus Bloom? A Detailed Guide to Osmanthus Blooming Patterns
Ordinary osmanthus blooms once a year, and with proper care it can bloom 2-3 times. But four-season osmanthus can bloom multiple times a year, and some can even bloom year-round. Let's take a look at several common osmanthus varieties below.
Common osmanthus varieties
1. Rixianggui, which blooms in all four seasons
Rixianggui gets its name from its constant blooming and rich fragrance, and it is distributed across northeastern China, northern China, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan. Its corolla ranges from pale yellow to lemon yellow, and its cumulative blooming period can last more than 200 days over the whole year.
2. Zhusha Dangui
Zhusha Dangui blooms from late September to early October, and is distributed in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Henan and other places in China. Its flowers are orange-red with a faint scent, clearly different in fragrance from other autumn osmanthus varieties.
3. Liuye Sugui
Liuye Sugui has lemon-yellow flowers and a strong fragrance, and is suitable for planting on hillsides and field edges. In the north it needs to be grown in pots and overwintered in a low-temperature greenhouse; a temperature of around 0°C will not harm potted osmanthus.
4. Jiulonggui
Jiulonggui is an ancient osmanthus variety native to Sichuan, and during the Ming and Qing dynasties it was presented by local officials as a precious ornamental plant to the imperial court of the time.
The several osmanthus varieties introduced above are common varieties from the four major groups: four-season osmanthus, dangui, jingui and yingui, and are provided for your reference only.
