Leptospermum scoparium blooms once a year, with its natural flowering period lasting from late autumn to the end of the following spring. Its flowers come in many colors, including red, pink, peach red and white, and there are single-petaled and double-petaled varieties. It is suitable for courtyard landscaping in the south and for pot cultivation in the north. When growing it in pots, pay attention to the following points.

Points to Note When Growing Leptospermum scoparium in Pots

1. Watering

Leptospermum scoparium is not drought-tolerant, so water it fairly diligently in normal times; however, be sure not to let water accumulate in the pot. Liking water does not mean the pot may hold standing water, otherwise the roots will easily rot.

2. Temperature and Light

Leptospermum scoparium likes a cool, humid environment with plenty of sunlight, and its optimum growing temperature is 18°C-25°C. In winter it needs temperatures kept above -1°C, while in summer it fears high temperatures and scorching sun, so give it plenty of light in the other seasons. It is fairly drought-tolerant and not demanding about soil, but slightly acidic soil rich in humus, loose, fertile and well-drained is best. It dislikes high temperatures and excessive moisture, and even more importantly, poor drainage and long-term water accumulation must be strictly guarded against.

3. Fertilizing

Too much fertilizer means Leptospermum scoparium cannot absorb it all, and these fertilizers may even burn its roots. Once the roots are burned, the whole plant will stop developing. So during the growing season, simply apply a thin, well-rotted liquid fertilizer once every 1 to 2 months.

4. Pruning

Carry out a careful pruning once a year after flowering, to dwarf the canopy and keep the tree shape attractive, and also to encourage the plant to sprout new flowering branches. When pruning, note that except for branches that affect the plant's shape, which can be cut off completely, the other branches should not all be cut away; generally cutting away half or two-thirds is enough. In addition, after pruning apply a quick-acting inorganic fertilizer once to promote plant growth and ensure flowering the following year.

Leptospermum scoparium has few pest and disease problems; generally, just pay attention to routine care.
