Eggplant, also known as dwarf eggplant, white eggplant, hanging vegetable, luosu, eggplant, purple eggplant, is a vegetable commonly eaten in daily life and a widely cultivated vegetable. So when should eggplant be sown in autumn? What should be noted when planting?

When should eggplant be sown in autumn?

The sowing time for autumn eggplant is July-August. In areas with an average July temperature of 16-18°C, the suitable sowing period is July 10 to July 17; in areas with an average July temperature of 18-20°C, the suitable sowing period is July 20 to July 27; in areas with an average July temperature of 2-21°C, the suitable sowing period is July 30 to August 7.

What should be noted when planting autumn eggplant?

1. Water management

After eggplant is transplanted, its water requirements are relatively strict. Water should be controlled in time to harden the seedlings and avoid excessive vegetative growth. The seedling hardening should be carried out once every 10—15 days to promote the roots to grow downward and lay a good foundation for high and quality yield in the later stage. After seedling hardening is completed, spraying Xinnongzhimo at the right time can isolate pathogen infection, improve the plant's resistance to natural disasters and the intensity of photosynthesis, and protect the eggplant so it grows vigorously.

2. Fertilization management

Maintaining a sufficient nutrient supply during eggplant growth is an important prerequisite for ensuring high and quality fruit yield. During the flowering and fruiting period of autumn eggplant, a high-quality organic fertilizer or a mixed nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilizer must be applied to the roots once every 10-15 days, combined with spraying Caiguo Zhuangdiling before flowering, at the young fruit stage, and at the expansion stage, so as to enhance the plant's water and fertilizer uptake, promote a high rate of repeated fruit setting in eggplant, fast fruit development, and high, stable, and quality yield.

3. Seedling stage management

During the seedling stage, thin out seedlings 2-3 times, removing overly dense and weak seedlings. The seedling raising period coincides with the rainy season, when humidity is high, so special attention should be paid to preventing damping-off and Rhizoctonia rot, and watering can be reduced. After disease occurs, immediately pull out diseased seedlings and scatter an appropriate amount of plant ash to control its spread. In addition, avoid root rot and excessive seedling growth. Depending on seedling growth, apply 1-2 topdressings of fully decomposed, lightly concentrated human manure and urine. The seedling age is 35-40 days; transplant on a sunny evening or a cloudy day.

4. Pest and disease control

In autumn, during periods of high temperature and drought, eggplant is most vulnerable to damage from tea yellow mites, stem borers, aphids, whiteflies, anthracnose, cottony leak, gray mold, and others, causing a large number of fallen flowers and fruits and deforming the fruit, seriously affecting eggplant yield and quality. Field management should, according to the occurrence patterns of pests and diseases, promptly use targeted pesticides for spray control before they occur. When applying pesticides for control, they can be mixed with photosynthetic nutrient film fertilizer to help the plant absorb light energy, improve fertilizer efficiency, boost vitality, and grow vigorously.

In addition, before planting, it is best to choose varieties that are marketable, high-quality and high-yielding, and relatively resistant to Phytophthora blight, brown spot, and Verticillium wilt.
