How should wild orchids be collected to select superior plants?
Wild orchids often grow in the mountains, and many flower lovers who are passionate about orchids go into the mountains repeatedly for orchids, but often return empty-handed. How can you collect wild superior orchids?
1. Look at the mountain
If it is a man-made forest or a severely logged mountain, it is best not to go there; orchids are relatively scarce in these mountains. On mountains where cattle and sheep have been, orchids are also frequently scarce. If the mountain has broadleaf forest and also moso bamboo, and both the broadleaf forest and moso bamboo are growing relatively well and have not been damaged, the low vegetation is not dense, and there are large drainage ditches running through the mountain, then there may be relatively many orchids on the mountain.
2. Look at the direction
Before entering the mountain forest, remember the direction in which the sun rises. No matter which mountain you go to, east-facing mountain hollows generally have relatively many orchids, and there are also a few special cases. If you cannot tell the direction, it is best to carry a compass when entering the mountain.
3. Orchid location
Different orchids grow in different locations. For example, Cymbidium kanran generally grows in relatively moist places close to water, near the middle of the mountain, and also grows in places close to the summit. There are also places that are sloped, or sloped and relatively spacious and flat. Cymbidium goeringii generally grows between the mountainside and the top, in relatively dry places; in places where the mountain is relatively high, Cymbidium ensifolium grows in relatively flexible locations, and Cymbidium faberi grows in places similar to those of Cymbidium goeringii.
4. Search for good orchids
If you find a patch of orchids, then among this patch of orchids there will be fine specimens, and you need to search carefully. Even under dead trees and among grass-covered fallen leaves, you should also search carefully. If they grow under large trees, they may be relatively distinctive; if they grow under cliffs, there may be fine orchids nearby. In gloomy and damp places, fine orchids are often hidden as well, and in relatively dangerous places with snakes and the like, there are often also good orchids.
5. Feeling and luck
Encountering rare orchids requires luck and feeling. Some people go into the mountains to look for orchids and get them without any effort, while others “search for him in the crowd a thousand times” and still cannot find a single superior orchid.
Wild superior orchids often grow in the mountains. There are relatively many mosquitoes and insects on the mountain, and it can even be relatively dangerous. It is best not to go alone, and you should pay attention to personal safety.
