Onion is a common vegetable in daily life. Although it has a somewhat strong flavor, its taste is good, and above all it can be eaten in many different ways, so it is very popular. At present, it is planted in most areas of our country. So where are the onion-producing areas?

1. Where are the onion-producing areas?

Onion originated in western Asia and is planted all over the world. In our country, it is mainly produced in Feng County in Jiangsu, Jiuquan in Gansu, Wuwei in Gansu, Jinxiang in Shandong, Shan County, Pingdu, Yutai, Xichang in Sichuan, Dongchuan in Yunnan, Yuanmou and other places. Of course, it is also planted in Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Jilin, Heilongjiang and other places.

2. When is the best time to plant onions?

1. Because climate conditions vary from place to place, the suitable sowing time is also different. Onion likes cool environmental conditions and has strong cold resistance; seedlings can withstand a low temperature of -7°C, and the bulb enters dormancy when the temperature is above 26°C. When it is above 30°C, the leaves will wither and die. The low-temperature period required for onion flower bud differentiation varies by variety. Generally, varieties can pass through the vernalization stage after 50 to 60 days at 2 to 5°C. Large seedlings need a shorter low-temperature period for vernalization, while small seedlings need a longer one; if the seedlings are too small, they easily fail to pass through the vernalization stage. Therefore, some varieties easily bolt, while others do not.

2. Most onion varieties in Shandong Province are sown in the open field for seedling raising in early September, and the seedling period is about 40 to 50 days. If sowing is too early, the seedlings grow large before winter, and the next year they easily bolt, which also consumes nutrients and reduces yield and quality. If sowing is too late, the seedlings are small and root development is poor; when they encounter severe cold, they are easily frozen to death. The suitable planting time is from mid-to-late October to early November. Before planting, the seedlings should have 3 to 5 leaves, a plant height of 15 to 20 cm, and a false stem diameter of 0.5 to 0.7 cm; this is the suitable seedling age.

Overall, there are many onion-producing areas, found almost all over the world. In our country, they are mainly produced in Jiangsu, Gansu, Shandong, Yunnan, Sichuan and other places.
