Torreya grandis, also known as Chinese torreya, torreya tree, Yu torreya, and wild Chinese yew seed, is a rare economic tree species native to China. It is planted in yellow soil, red soil, and yellow-brown soil areas. Below is an introduction to the cultivation techniques for Torreya grandis.

What are the cultivation techniques for Torreya grandis?

1. Variety selection

There are many varieties of Torreya grandis, and almost every producing area has its own local native varieties. Therefore, when selecting Torreya grandis varieties, the principle of "matching the site and tree, matching the variety" must be followed, and local native varieties should be chosen for cultivation as much as possible.

2. Seedling raising

Sowing: Remove the seed coat from the harvested seeds, then stratify the seeds in sand, and sow once the germination rate reaches above 90%. Before sowing, apply sufficient base fertilizer, mainly farmyard manure. The planting spacing is 15cm×30cm, place the seeds horizontally with the radicle facing down, cover with shallow soil (about 3 times the transverse diameter of the seed), cover with rice straw, and keep the bed surface loose and moist.

Grafting: Grafting is best done in mid-to-late March. Cut grafting or cleft grafting can be used. After grafting, cultivate for another 2~5a until the seedlings reach over 50cm in height, then they can be used for afforestation.

3. Planting

Choose hills or low mountains below 700m in altitude, with a slope of 5-15°, loose, deep, and fertile soil (soil layer over 80cm, humus over 20cm), good drainage, gravel content less than 20.0%, sufficient moisture, and convenient transportation as the planting site. The initial planting density is 33 plants/667m2, with a spacing of 4m×5m.

4. Management

Water and fertilizer: Apply organic fertilizer once a year in January-February in spring, with farmyard manure being the best, burying the fertilizer at the roots; where conditions permit, a drip irrigation system can be built.

Pruning: Control the height and crown width of the tree. The crown height should be controlled at 4-5m, and the crown should maintain multiple trunks. After shaping, regularly prune overly dense, diseased, and dead branches every year.

Termites, Torreya grandis small leaf roller, and rust snails are all pests that harm the growth of Torreya grandis. Everyone must take preventive measures in advance and apply pesticides properly.
