How to grow lucky bamboo in water so it thrives
Lucky bamboo is a common indoor potted plant. Because its name contains “fortune” and symbolizes abundant wealth, many people grow it. So how do you grow lucky bamboo in water? And what common varieties are there?
1. Basic introduction to lucky bamboo
The scientific name of lucky bamboo is lucky bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana). It is a perennial evergreen small tree foliage plant in the Asparagaceae family, genus Dracaena. It is also called wan shou zhu, ju hua wan shou zhu, kai yun zhu, fu gui ta, and so on.
The place of origin of lucky bamboo is not China, but the Canary Islands and tropical regions of Africa and Asia. Because of its strong ornamental value and good symbolism, China has widely cultivated lucky bamboo since the late 1980s.
Lucky bamboo can reach 2 m in height. The plant is slender, upright, and branched in the upper part. The leaves are long and lance-shaped, resembling bamboo; the leaves are alternate or nearly opposite, papery, long lance-shaped, with 3-7 obvious main veins, short petioles, and deep green blades. The rhizome creeps horizontally and is nodular; the stems are thick and upright, and the plant has a dainty form.
2. How do you grow lucky bamboo in water?
1. Trim the leaves at the base, then cut part of the root at an angle; a larger contact area gives better water absorption;
2. Prepare a suitable glass container and pour in 1/3 water, insert the lucky bamboo into the vase, and change the water once every 3 days;
3. After the lucky bamboo has rooted, you can directly add water to the bottle without frequently changing the water;
4. Keeping room temperature at 16-26°C is most suitable for lucky bamboo growth. At the same time, place the lucky bamboo in a spot with scattered light to supplement lighting.
Lucky bamboo likes a warm environment and can grow all year round, but when the temperature is too low, because the root system absorbs insufficient water, yellow-brown patches will appear at the leaf tips and leaf margins, so attention should be paid to keeping it warm in winter.
3. What common varieties of lucky bamboo are there?
1. Golden-edged lucky bamboo: the leaf margins have pale yellow, white, or golden edges or longitudinal stripes. It is elegant and gorgeous, and with its graceful posture, it is full of bamboo charm.
2. Silver-edged lucky bamboo: the green leaves have a silver-white broad band or border at the edge, which is very obvious and eye-catching.
3. Golden-hearted lucky bamboo: the middle part of the plant has green-yellow or golden longitudinal stripes, which is rather special.
Lucky bamboo is still very easy to grow. As long as you pay more attention to temperature and watering, it can generally be grown very well.
