Nasturtium is a variety of magnolia. When it blooms, the flowers cover the branches, with red and white blossoms, the stamens slightly pink, closely resembling a lotus, and the leaves are like lotus leaves, shaped and colored like lotus root, making it very appealing. So, do you know how to grow nasturtium seeds?

1. Sowing Time

Generally, spring sowing is carried out in February to March each year, or autumn sowing in September to October. It is generally recommended to sow in spring, but in short, gardeners can decide the sowing time according to their own circumstances.

2. Seed Selection

The seeds used for sowing nasturtium must be healthy and plump; avoid using seeds affected by pests or diseases, as this will affect the seed germination rate.

3. Seed Germination

Before sowing nasturtium seeds, they can be soaked in warm water for 1 day, then placed in a plastic box lined with two layers of moist paper towels. At the same time, a layer of paper towel should be placed on top and sprayed damp, then the lid is put on for germination.

4. Sowing Soil

The soil for sowing nasturtium can be made by mixing 1 part each of peat, vermiculite, and perlite. After the soil is prepared, put it directly into a seedling pot.

5. Sowing Method

After the nasturtium seeds germinate, the seeds will show white after about 3 days. At this point, the seeds can be sown directly into the soil. At the same time, water to keep moist and cover with a layer of fine soil.

6. Pinching the Seedlings

When the nasturtium seedlings have grown 5 or 6 leaves, pinching can be done once to promote flowering, and only 4 large leaves need to be kept; the rest can be removed.

7. Transplanting and Planting Out

When the outdoor temperature rises to 10°C, gardeners can prepare to plant out and transplant the nasturtium. To maintain soil nutrients, mix another 10% granular chicken manure fertilizer and 10% worm castings into the soil as a base fertilizer, then pinch the growing tips once more.

The sowing method for nasturtium seeds is not difficult, but people find the growth process of nasturtium flower buds relatively difficult, so gardeners need to wait patiently.
