Hanzhong oranges generally ripen in mid-to-late October. Hanzhong, Shaanxi belongs to the transition zone from the northern subtropical to the warm temperate region, with superior climatic conditions that favor citrus growth. The citrus here is brightly colored, with high soluble solids content in the fruit and a balanced sweet-and-sour taste.

I. The advantages of Hanzhong oranges

In Hanzhong, Shaanxi, the massive Qinling Mountains to the north block the invasion of cold air from the northwest, while the winding Bashan Mountains to the south prevent warm, moist air currents from pushing straight through. The temperature inversion layer and slope-wall effect at the foot of the Qinling Mountains create a unique microclimate zone, with little severe cold in winter and little extreme heat in summer. The citrus here, first, suffers no damage from high-temperature dry-hot winds during the flowering period, resulting in a high fruit-setting rate; second, autumn temperatures drop early with large day-night temperature differences, which favors fruit coloring and ripening, so the citrus here has a brilliant fruit surface, high soluble solids content, and moderate sweetness and acidity. Third, it is close to the markets of the northwest, northeast, and north China, with a broad consumer base and an obvious locational advantage.

II. The development history of Hanzhong oranges

Hanzhong has a long history of citrus cultivation, dating back more than 2,000 years. Hanzhong citrus is sweet with a touch of sourness, has a unique flavor and excellent quality, and is deeply favored by northern consumers, mainly those in the northwest. Vigorously developing the citrus industry has effectively promoted the formation of an advantageous industry

and the increase of farmers' incomes. Hanzhong's total citrus area has reached more than 200,000 mu, with 209 administrative villages in 16 townships and 55,000 households and 149,000 farmers engaged in citrus cultivation; 100,000 mu of citrus has obtained national green food certification, and 2,000 mu of citrus has passed national Good Agricultural Practice certification. It has cultivated two provincial- and municipal-level leading citrus agricultural industrialization enterprises, Panya and Dongsheng, and more than 10 citrus professional cooperatives such as Huayuan, Zhengjiapo, and Sanhe. The citrus industry has become the most profitable and most promising strong characteristic industry in Hanzhong's rural economy.

Hanzhong has 250,000 mu of citrus planting, with an annual output of 300,000 tons and an output value of hundreds of millions of yuan. The per capita income of citrus farmers is more than 3,000 yuan higher than that of ordinary farmers, effectively driving the development of rural brokers, seedling cultivation, warehousing and transportation, and other industries.
