What are the propagation methods for Belgian azaleas?
Belgian azaleas can be propagated by sowing, cuttings, grafting and layering, among which sowing propagation is best done in spring, layering in April-May, and grafting is best done in the plum rain season. Below is a brief introduction to several propagation methods.
1. Propagation by sowing
It is generally best done in spring. Before sowing, the soil needs to be sterilized first, then the seeds are evenly scattered on the soil surface. After sowing, there is no need to cover them with soil; just press gently, and after about half a month the seeds will germinate.
2. Propagation by layering
When layering Belgian azaleas, choose the period from April to May. First select a mature branch that has grown for two or three years, then about 20 cm from the top use a knife to peel out a ring 1.5 cm wide, then wrap it with protective film. During this period keep the soil moist. After about 4-5 months of care, new roots will grow, and at that point we can separate them.
3. Propagation by cuttings
Before propagating Belgian azaleas by cuttings, first select the cuttings. It is generally best to choose thick, sturdy branches, trim them off, then remove the leaves at the bottom and they are ready for cutting. Among the propagation methods for Belgian azaleas, cutting propagation is one of the simpler methods. We just insert the branch directly into the soil and then water it; be sure to water thoroughly at one time, and after about 2 months it will take root.
4. Propagation by grafting
When grafting, it is best to do it during the plum rain season. First select a young shoot of the Belgian azalea as the scion, then use a two-year-old sturdy rhododendron as the rootstock, then cut a slit about 3 cm long in the rootstock and insert the scion. After inserting, tie the joint tightly, and after about two months it will survive.
Propagating Belgian azaleas requires a certain level of skill, so in general it is recommended to buy potted plants directly and take them home for care.
