How to Grow Broccoli from Seed? Detailed Sowing Methods and Steps
Broccoli, also known as green cauliflower, green broccoli, asparagus broccoli, broccoli, green cauliflower or American cauliflower, is a common vegetable cultivated around the world. Below, let's find out how to grow it from seed.
How to grow broccoli from seed?
1. Preparation
For broccoli planting, choose a loose soil with high dryness, good drainage, ventilation and light transmission, and rich organic matter; before sowing, cultivate, fertilize, disinfect and weed. At the same time, the soil moisture must be adjusted in the seedbed; if the soil moisture is too low, it affects the swelling and germination of the seeds; if the humidity is too high, the soil will be closed.
2. Sowing
Before sowing, soak the seeds in warm water at 50°C for 25 minutes to kill the bacteria lurking in the seeds. Broccoli can be planted outdoors after Qingming in spring, or in late summer and early autumn; in the Zhejiang region, it can be planted from July to October. Then evenly sow the treated broccoli seeds on the prepared seedbed, cover with fine soil, and use a fine nozzle to spray water so that the seeds and the glutinous rice surface are in close contact.
3. Management
During the entire germination period, it is necessary to observe the field in the morning and evening, observe seed germination, soil moisture on the kneaded surface, and the intensity of sunlight or drainage on rainy days. During the sunny and high-temperature period from July to September, the germination and emergence stage mainly relies on watering to regulate soil temperature, keeping the soil temperature at a suitable temperature of 25-30°C to facilitate normal emergency. Watering can be done in the afternoon and evening to avoid rainy weather after watering. During this period, cover with 2-3 layers of sunshade net day and night to lower the temperature and protect from rain, and wait until the two emergency cotyledons are green before uncovering the sunshade.
4. Transplanting
Before transplanting, apply farmyard manure as base fertilizer, apply it evenly, plow and break up the clods, make beds, and cultivate on high beds in the rainy season; make beds 1 m wide with double-row cultivation, and in the dry season use flat beds and wide-bed cultivation; for autumn and early spring cultivation, it is advisable to cover with plastic film. When planting, carry as much soil as possible, damage the roots as little as possible, reduce the seedling recovery period, and after transplanting, water management should be strengthened.
Later, simply carry out field management work in the same way as for other crops.
