How Best to Plant Sprouted Sweet Potatoes
Cooked sweet potatoes are sweet, soft and glutinous, suitable for young and old alike. Sometimes, if stored improperly at home, they easily sprout. How should you plant sprouted sweet potatoes?
1. How to plant sprouted sweet potatoes
1. If the sweet potato has just sprouted, you can place the sprouted sweet potato in a bottle filled with water, so the sprouts grow taller and more numerous.
2. After the sweet potato sprouts have grown fully, cut off the sprouts with leaves and place them in a shallow bowl filled with water to cultivate roots.
3. Once the roots have grown relatively dense, they can be transplanted.
4. Sweet potatoes like a warm environment, so choose land with good sunlight and loose, fertile soil, dig the planting holes, with each hole about 30 cm apart, plant the sweet potato seedlings one by one, cover with soil, and water thoroughly. The leafy part of the sweet potato will grow vines outward, while the roots will grow tubers 15-30 cm deep in the soil.
5. At the beginning, water needs to be supplied every day; later, water once a week, supplement with some fertilizer as appropriate, and do a good job of weeding. After about 120 days, the sweet potatoes will be almost ready to mature.
2. How to store sweet potatoes
1. To store sweet potatoes at home, first find a wooden box or cardboard box, place some wooden boards on the floor in the corner, put the wooden box or cardboard box on top, spread some dry straw on the bottom of the box, put the sweet potatoes in, and when the temperature is below 15°C spread something over them to keep them warm. When the weather is good, the temperature is high, and the sun is out, open the box and ventilate it for a while; they can be stored for a long time.
2. Wrap them in newspaper and place them in a cool, shady place; this way they can be stored for about 3-4 weeks. Before wrapping, sun-dry the sweet potatoes first, then store them. You can also wrap the sweet potatoes in newspaper and put them in the refrigerator crisper; this way they can be stored even longer and will not sprout.
3. A small amount of sweet potatoes can be steamed, then air-dried, sliced, and sun-dried for storage. Dried sweet potatoes have low moisture content, so they can be stored for a long time.
Sprouted sweet potatoes can also continue to be planted, and through your own efforts, you can obtain new sweet potatoes.
