All things in the world need to live and reproduce. Compared with animals, how do plants, which are usually much quieter, accomplish this? So what are the methods of plant reproduction?

1. What are the methods of plant reproduction?

The methods of plant reproduction include division propagation, layering propagation, cutting propagation, and sexual reproduction. The most common of these is cutting propagation: cutting off a part of a plant's vegetative organ, such as roots, stems, or leaves, inserting it into a substrate under suitable conditions, and using its meristematic or regenerative capacity to make it take root or sprout and become a new plant.

1. Division propagation

A propagation method in which the vegetative organs of a plant are separated and cultivated into independent new individuals. This method is simple and has a high survival rate. The time of division varies with the species of medicinal plant and the climate, and is generally carried out in late autumn or early spring during the dormancy period of the plant. According to the different parts of the mother plant used, it can be divided into bulb division (such as saffron crocus), block division (such as Chinese yam, bletilla, etc.), root division (such as red sage, aster, etc.), and offshoot division (such as amomum, lilyturf, etc.).

2. Layering propagation

Burying and pressing the branches or stems of the mother plant into the soil, or wrapping them on the tree branches with soil, moss, etc., so that they take root, and then cutting them away from the mother plant to become independent plants. Layering methods include ordinary layering, serpentine layering, mound layering, air layering, etc. Dutchman's pipe, rose, fleeceflower root, chastetree fruit, and weeping forsythia can all be propagated by this method.

3. Sexual reproduction

Sexual reproduction is also called seed propagation. Generally, seedlings grown from seeds have strong adaptability to the environment and also have a high propagation coefficient. A seed is a living entity in a dormant period. Only good seeds can produce good offspring. There are many kinds of medicinal plants, and the shape, size, color, lifespan, and germination characteristics of their seeds are all different.
