How Do You Plant Oak Seeds? Master the Correct Sowing Method
Oak trees, also known as oak or Chinese oak, belong to the genus Quercus and are the national tree of the United States. They are planted throughout northern and southern China and are propagated from seed, so how do you plant oak seeds?
How do you plant oak seeds?
1. Seed selection and soaking
Select high-quality, plump oak seeds and give them cold treatment. Wrap the selected seeds in a damp cloth and place them in a constant-temperature chamber at 5 degrees to promote germination; they will sprout in 30-45 days.
2. Site selection and soil preparation
Choose flat, sunny land to plant oak seeds, and prepare the soil, remove weeds, fertilize and water in advance before sowing. The sowing rate is 100-250 kg per 667 sq m (1 mu). When sowing, the seeds should be laid horizontally to encourage the radicle to grow downward. Cover with 2-5 cm of soil; the seedlings can reach 20-40 cm in height in the same year.
Generally keep them in a moist soil layer 1 cm deep; when the weather is not especially dry, there is no need to water every day. During management before the seedlings emerge, there is no need to water much, to prevent the soil from caking, which causes seeds to rot or struggle. After root cutting and sowing, seedlings emerge 15 to 20 days later.
3. Seedling emergence management
When oak seedlings enter a period of rapid height growth, pests and diseases need to be removed during this time. Weak seedlings require thinning of overly dense seedlings and filling gaps; the purpose is to prevent root damage caused by wind leaking through, and the seedling density should be maintained at about sixty to eighty per sq m.
When planting oak seeds, be sure to choose good-quality ones, and the sowing time must also be suitable, so that the germination rate and growth will be good.
