How to Grow Crown Daisy? Detailed Guide to Planting Methods and Key Techniques
Crown daisy is what we usually eat as garland chrysanthemum (Glebionis coronaria); it got this name because it was a court delicacy in ancient times. As a common seasonal vegetable, how is crown daisy best grown?
How to Grow Crown Daisy
1. To grow garland chrysanthemum, choose loose, fertile, well-drained sandy soil, and after selecting the site, begin land preparation and plowing. When plowing, apply 500-600 kg of farmyard manure per mu as base fertilizer, then harrow finely and level the soil, and make beds according to the terrain: make flat beds on flat terrain and short beds on uneven terrain.
2. Select intact seeds and pre-sprout them before sowing. Soak the seeds in warm water for 10-20 minutes, and after the water cools, continue soaking for 1 day. Remove them and let them dry, then place them in a room at 25°C for sprouting, washing them with water once a day to prevent the seeds from spoiling.
3. Sowing can be done in spring or autumn. In spring, direct sowing in the open field or sowing with plastic mulch can be used, while in autumn, cold frames or open-field sowing in batches and stages can be used.
4. Sowing methods include broadcasting or drilling in rows. Broadcasting generally uses 4-5 kg of seed per mu, while drilling is done at a row spacing of about 10 cm, and the seeding rate is generally only half that of broadcasting. When sowing in early spring, cover with medicated soil to prevent damping-off disease; seedling-stage management is generally 20-30 days.
5. After 5-7 days from sowing, they will germinate and emerge. During seed germination, pay attention to maintaining moisture so the soil does not become too dry, which is unfavorable for seed germination.
6. When the seedlings grow to 2-3 cm, thinning can be carried out, and weak seedlings should be pulled out. The plant spacing for thinning should be kept at 1-2 cm. While thinning, cultivate and weed, and cultivate shallowly to avoid damaging the root system.
7. When the seedlings grow to 3-4 true leaves, transplant them, with a plant spacing of 4-6 cm. When thinning and setting the plants, water them to prevent seedling death, and also apply a dilute liquid nitrogen fertilizer to promote rapid growth. When they grow to 20 cm, they can be harvested.
Crown daisy can strengthen the spleen and stomach and has good effects on cough with excessive phlegm and habitual constipation. Its planting method is also relatively simple, so everyone can try it themselves.
