Peperomia obtusifolia is a plant with many different values: it can be grown as a potted plant, it can purify the air, and it also has medicinal value. So what exactly is the method for propagating Peperomia obtusifolia from cuttings?

1. Basic Introduction to Peperomia obtusifolia

Peperomia obtusifolia is a perennial evergreen herbaceous plant belonging to the order Piperales and the family Piperaceae. It is also called pepper grass, green-leaf jade, and so on.

The stems of Peperomia obtusifolia are creeping and much branched. The leaves are densely arranged, nearly equal in size, somewhat fleshy, with transparent glandular dots, and are broadly elliptical or nearly round.

The spike inflorescences are solitary, both terminal and axillary, 2-4.5 cm long. The berries are nearly egg-shaped, nearly 1 mm long, with pointed tips. The flowering period is from February to April and from September to December.

2. Method for Propagating Peperomia obtusifolia from Cuttings

1. Choose a vigorous, healthy terminal branch as the cutting, and cut it to a length of about 5 cm;

2. Keep 1-2 leaves on the cut stem segment, let the cut surface dry, and then insert it into a moist sand bed;

3. Roots will form after waiting 10-15 days. Cutting is generally carried out in April-May each year. If temperature-control equipment is available, cuttings can be taken year-round.

In addition to propagation by cuttings, Peperomia obtusifolia can also be propagated by division:

Use a potting soil made from leaf mold, peat soil, and some perlite or sand, with an appropriate amount of base fertilizer added.

During the growing season, apply a top dressing once every half month. For watering, water that has been left standing in a water container for 1-2 days is best. Reduce watering in winter. Temperature changes directly affect leaf color. The suitable winter temperature for variegated-leaf types is 18-20°C; for green-leaf types it is about 15°C.

Division propagation is mainly used for propagating variegated-leaf varieties.

If you want to grow Peperomia obtusifolia, you can choose a propagation method according to your own situation. After the plants survive, you also need to pay attention to management factors such as light, watering, and fertilizing.
