Balloon flowers have very high ornamental value, their blooms have relatively large petals, and their roots can also be used as medicine. Quite a few people grow balloon flowers. Let's take a look below at how to grow balloon flowers.

1. Seed collection

Balloon flower seeds can generally be collected in September-October. Once the balloon flower seeds are collected, they need to be stored in a ventilated, dry place. The germination ability of balloon flower seeds generally lasts for 6 months, or about 8 months, so balloon flower seeds should not be stored longer than this; exceeding this time will reduce the germination rate.

2. Soaking the seeds

Before planting, balloon flower seeds need to be soaked in 30°C warm water for about 8 hours, then taken out and wrapped in a damp cloth, placed in a spot at 25-30°C, and covered with a damp hemp piece for germination. In addition, it is recommended to rinse them with warm water once a day for about 5 consecutive days; once the seeds begin to sprout, they can be sown and planted.

3. Choosing the seedbed

If sowing at home, gardeners should prepare the soil and flower pots in advance, put the soil into the pots, and add a small amount of base fertilizer. For a balloon flower seedbed, generally choose a sandy loam plot with plenty of sunlight, deep soil, and good drainage. After choosing the site, apply 3000 kg of farmyard manure or pen manure per mu, plus 50 kg each of superphosphate and cake fertilizer or 15 kg of diammonium phosphate, spread evenly over the ground, deep-plow the soil 35 cm, level and harrow it fine, and make flat beds 1 m wide, with the length determined by the terrain.

4. Sowing method

The sowing method for balloon flowers is simple: directly dibble the soaked seeds into the flower pot, water thoroughly after planting, then place the pot in a cool, ventilated place. Generally, they will sprout about 20 days after sowing.

5. Care

After sowing, balloon flower seeds generally sprout in about 15-20 days, and some take as long as 30 days to sprout. Be patient and do not give up on them; keep the moisture level consistent before they sprout. After sprouting, there is no need to keep a cover on, and they can get diffused light, but do not expose them to strong sun, because newly sprouted seedlings are very fragile and can easily dry up and die from sun exposure.

When balloon flowers have just been sown, they are still rather delicate, so everyone should care for them attentively.
