How to Grow Climbing Roses

1. Soil

Climbing roses have wide adaptability and are not strict about soil, but loose, fertile soil rich in organic matter is more suitable.

2. Light and Temperature

They prefer a warm environment with ample sunlight and good drainage. The optimal growing temperature is 15-25°C. Below 5°C they begin dormancy, and above 33°C flower quality is poorer; when light is insufficient, the stems and vines become thin and weak, the flowers become smaller, the number of flowers decreases, and the flower color fades.

3. Watering and Fertilizing

Climbing roses must not lack water throughout their entire life cycle. From budding to leafing out and blooming, attention should be paid to supplying sufficient water. Especially during the flowering period, they need particularly large amounts of water, and the soil should be kept moist frequently to ensure the flowers are plump and vivid. After entering dormancy, the water requirement is relatively reduced, and water should be controlled appropriately.

Because climbing roses bloom abundantly and have high fertilizer demands, sufficient base fertilizer should be applied during the winter dormancy period. Fertilizer should be applied promptly during the growing season. Generally, after the peak bloom in May, topdressing is applied to promote summer flowering and a flourishing autumn bloom. In late autumn, fertilizing should be controlled to prevent excessive autumn shoots from suffering frost damage. When leaves begin to unfold in spring, because new roots are growing vigorously, be careful not to use concentrated fertilizer, so as not to damage the new roots and affect growth.
