Can chives be grown hydroponically? A detailed guide to hydroponic chive growing methods
Chives are a common vegetable in daily life, usually planted in soil. With the rise of more and more hydroponic vegetables, can chives be grown hydroponically? How do you grow them?
1. Can chives be grown hydroponically?
Chives can actually be grown hydroponically, and the growing method is quite simple. Even on a home balcony, you can grow hydroponic chives yourself.
2. Hydroponic chive growing methods
1. The first step in hydroponic chive growing is selecting the chives. From the chive bed, choose thick, vigorous chives. It is best to water the chive plot thoroughly in advance, then pull up the selected chives with their roots. When pulling, your hands should be gentle and slow so as not to break the roots.
2. After pulling the chives out of the soil, remove the rotten old roots, leaving only the fresh white roots. Also remove the old leaves at the base of the chives, then put them together and store them in a box to prevent the roots from being bumped and injured.
3. For hydroponic chives, you can buy a dedicated hydroponic box with small round holes on top, placing one or two chives in each small round hole. If you do not want to spend money, you can buy an ordinary leak-proof flower pot or a rectangular plastic basin. The size and number of basins depends on how many hydroponic chives you need.
4. Hydroponic chives means letting the chive roots grow in water, so we need to add nutrient solution to the water in advance to ensure the chives' nutritional needs during growth. Do not add too much nutrient solution; it needs to be added in proportion according to the instructions.
5. During cultivation, try not to damage the chive roots. The nutrient solution and water need to be stirred evenly. When planting, submerge all the chive roots in the water, with the water level even with the chive roots. If there is too little water, the roots cannot absorb nutrients; if there is too much water, it will cause the neck to rot.
6. Move the planted chives to the balcony. If it is summer, do not let the sun shine directly on them. A room temperature of around 20 degrees is most suitable for their growth. During growth, they need to absorb water and nutrients, so we need to change the water for them and replenish the nutrient solution in time.
How about it? Isn't the hydroponic chive growing method very simple? You can also grow hydroponic chives on your own balcony.
