How to Grow Green Plants: A Complete Guide to Planting Methods
Green plants is the short name for green ornamental foliage plants. Because of their strong shade tolerance, they can be grown and cared for indoors as indoor ornamental plants. So how do you grow green plants?
1. How to grow green plants
1. Choosing plants
Choose healthy, actively growing plants with no signs of disease or distress. Start with forgiving plants rather than plants with special needs. Some suggestions for easy indoor plants are: dragon tree, spider plant, snake plant, rubber plant, baby rubber plant, peace lily.
2. Light and position
In general, the best position for a plant is a bright window with direct sun for only part of the day. Plants like light, but most do not necessarily like being baked in the sun. Check the plant's label and follow the instructions for light requirements.
3. Temperature
Indoor plants are usually tropical plants, so it is very important for the indoor environment to mimic those conditions as closely as possible. In general, daytime temperatures are between 20 and 24 degrees. Nighttime temperatures are no higher than 10 degrees.
4. Pots and soil
Plants need a suitably sized container. Too large, and the moist soil can rot the roots. Too small, and the crowded roots will starve. In most cases, the indoor plant you buy can stay in its existing container for about a year. Many indoor plants benefit from repotting every few years. Each time you repot, go up only one container size (about 1 cm).
Indoor plants need well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Use packaged indoor plant potting mix - garden soil is too heavy for most plants. Specialized soil can be used for specific plants (such as cacti, orchids and African violets), but in most cases a general indoor potting mix is fine.
5. Watering
Water once a week, spraying the plants with a watering can.
6. Fertilizer
Fertilizing is needed during the growing season (spring to early fall for most plants); applying a slow-release pellet or spike once every few months is enough.
