How to Grow a Cedar? Detailed Explanation of Planting Methods and Technical Key Points
Cedar is an evergreen tree that blooms every year in October-November, with a spire-shaped crown and needle-shaped leaves, and it is planted in many parts of our country. So how is it grown?
How to grow a cedar?
1. Growing from seed
(1) Select high-quality, plump cedar seeds. Sow in mid-to-late March (October-November is also acceptable), with a sowing rate of 75 kg/hectare, or sow earlier. Before sowing, soak the seeds in cold water for 1-2 days, and sow after drying; after 3-5 days they begin to sprout, which can last about 1 month, with a germination rate of 90%.
(2) Choose flat terrain, sunny and fertile soil for sowing and raising seedlings. Prepare the soil in advance, remove weeds, apply fertilizer, and water. Keep the sowing depth at about 2 cm.
(3) When the one-year-old seedlings reach 30-40 cm in height, they can be transplanted in the spring of the following year.
2. Growing from cuttings
(1) Cutting propagation can be carried out in both spring and summer. In spring, it is best before March 20; in summer, late July is best.
(2) In spring, cut one-year-old sturdy branches from young mother trees, treat them with rooting powder or 500 mg/L naphthalene acetic acid, which can promote rooting. Then insert them into well-aerated sandy loam soil, water thoroughly, and set up a double-layer shade shed for shading.
(3) In summer, it is best to select semi-lignified branches of the current year as cuttings. In terms of management, in addition to strengthening shading, plastic film should also be added to maintain humidity. 30-50 days after cutting, callus tissue can form; at this time, a solution of 0.2% urea and 0.1% potassium dihydrogen phosphate can be used for foliar fertilization.
After the seedlings are grown, they can be transplanted in February-March of spring. When transplanting, the plants should be kept with soil balls, the plant spacing should be reasonably controlled, and work such as topdressing, pruning and pest and disease control should be done well.
