Peach tree propagation methods have always been a key concern for many friends. Everyone usually knows about cuttings, so what other methods are there? Let's take a look!

Peach tree propagation methods

Peach trees are mainly propagated by grafting. They can also be propagated by sowing, cuttings and layering. The most ideal propagation method can be chosen according to the variety and the local growing environment to achieve high yields.

1. Cuttings

In spring, use hardwood cuttings; in the plum rain season, use softwood cuttings. The cuttings must be vigorous and well developed. Hardwood cuttings are mainly taken in spring. Cut the cuttings diagonally at about 20 cm. To prevent disease infection and promote rooting, the lower end of the cuttings is best treated with a fungicide, 50% carbendazim at 600-1,200 times dilution, and quickly dipped in indolebutyric acid at 750-4,500 mg/L before inserting. The plant and row spacing is 4 cm×30 cm, and the insertion depth should preferably be 2/3 of the cutting length.

2. Grafting

For propagation, the rootstock is mostly wild peach or peach seedlings (own-root stock). Both twig grafting and bud grafting have a relatively high survival rate.

Twig grafting: carried out in March when the buds have begun to swell. Cut grafting is commonly used, and one- or two-year-old seedlings are best used as the rootstock.

Bud grafting: carried out in July-August, mostly using the “T” shaped graft. One-year-old well-developed seedlings are best used as the rootstock.

3. Sowing

The flowering period of peach is March-April, and the fruit ripening period is June-August. Harvest ripe fruit, pile them up and mash them, remove the flesh, and dry them to collect clean seeds for autumn sowing. Before sowing, soak the seeds for 5-7 days. Autumn-sown seeds germinate early the following year, have a high emergence rate, and grow quickly and vigorously.
