Many edible fungi are grown through artificial cultivation, and growing edible fungi also requires preparing a dedicated space. Many people want to grow mushrooms in a basement, so can you grow mushrooms in a basement?

1. Can you grow mushrooms in a basement?

A basement can be used to grow mushrooms, but it must meet the growth conditions and nutritional needs of the mushrooms. Different mushrooms require slightly different growing conditions and nutrients. Mushrooms suitable for growing in a basement include shaggy ink cap mushrooms, enoki mushrooms, button mushrooms, and others.

2. How do you grow mushrooms in a basement?

1. The basement must be kept ventilated, and the humidity must be adjusted according to the mushroom variety;

2. Use a mixture of distillers' grains and sawdust as the growing material, with distillers' grains at 40 percent and sawdust at 60 percent, then add water to blend it, with water, distillers' grains, and sawdust accounting for 60 percent of the ratio;

3. Choose the type of mushroom you like for sowing, and the sowing rate is generally about 20 percent to 30 percent;

4. Then wait for the mushrooms to grow, and once they have grown, harvest them promptly.

3. Precautions for growing mushrooms in a basement

1. Disinfection is required

3 days before the growing material is brought into the room, seal the mushroom room and use 2 kg each of 40% formaldehyde and 2.5% avermectin per 100 sq m, or fumigate by igniting sulfur, keeping it sealed for 24-48 h to thoroughly kill pests, diseases, and contaminating microorganisms, then open the doors and windows for ventilation.

2. Maintain moisture

Generally, spray 1-2 times per day at a water rate of 500 g/sq m. Water maintenance should follow the principle of “spray more when there are many mushrooms, spray less when there are few mushrooms; spray more in the early stage of mushroom bud growth, and spray less in the later stage of growth,” and be handled flexibly according to climate conditions and mycelial growth.

In addition, when cultivating mushrooms, it is also necessary to prevent pests and diseases so that the mushrooms can grow healthily.
