Ginger is an indispensable seasoning in our daily lives. It is generally planted in relatively deep soil layers and is a rhizomatous plant. During its specific growth process, ginger is very prone to developing certain diseases due to environmental, climatic and other factors, among which the more typical one is ginger root rot. So what causes ginger root rot? What effective prevention tips are there?

I. What causes ginger root rot?

1. Soil causes

The soil is acidic and is clay soil; the soil fertility is insufficient and there are many weeds; the planting site has been rotated with other varieties of leguminous plants.

2. Causes related to planting density

The ginger planting density is too high, resulting in row spacing and plant spacing that are too small, blocking light and providing poor air permeability. This weakens the plants' photosynthesis and increases pests and diseases.

3. Applying too much nitrogen fertilizer

If too much nitrogen fertilizer is applied during topdressing, the growth will be too tender to resist various pests and diseases. It is also possible that the fertilizer was not fully decomposed or that the organic fertilizer carried root rot pathogens, which naturally makes ginger prone to root rot during cultivation.

4. Seed selection without disinfection

After selecting ginger seeds, they were not disinfected and already carried root rot pathogens.

5. Causes related to waterlogging

The site chosen for planting ginger is relatively low-lying with poor drainage, so waterlogging naturally occurs easily. Especially in hot seasons with excess rain, if drainage is not timely, root rot is very likely to occur.

6. Causes related to temperature

After heavy rain, when the temperature suddenly rises and turns sunny, root rot is likely to occur.

II. Main symptoms of ginger root rot

Ginger root rot first infects the rhizomes at ground level, and then the affected areas show dark green water-soaked lesions that slowly extend downward, causing newly sprouted buds and underground stems to turn yellowish-brown or light brown, with rotting and softening. The aboveground stems directly turn yellow and wither or die. If new ginger has grown, it quickly spreads to the entire ginger block, showing a white mold layer, making it impossible to sell on the market. This is a very big threat to growers.

III. What effective prevention tips are there for ginger root rot?

1. Soak the seed ginger

Before planting ginger, seed selection is very important. Choose ginger that has not been attacked by pests or diseases during storage as seed ginger. Then soak it in a professional pesticide for 20 minutes before planting. As for which specific pesticide to buy, you can purchase it at a professional seedling market.

2. Choose a suitable planting site

Choosing the plot for planting ginger is also very important. It is best to choose a sunny spot with relatively deep soil, relatively dry conditions, strong air permeability and good fertilizer retention.

3. Rational fertilization

When planting ginger, fertilizer must be sufficient; otherwise, weak growth and weak resistance may occur due to fertilizer deficiency, making it more susceptible to infection when diseases attack.
