How to plant fresh lotus seeds? Teaching you the correct planting method
Lotus seeds are the fruit of the lotus, an aquatic plant, and besides being edible and medicinal, they can also be used for sowing. So how should fresh lotus seeds be planted? Let's learn about it below.
How to plant fresh lotus seeds?
1. Time
March to early May. Under suitable temperature and light conditions, lotus seeds need 60-80 days from sowing to flowering in spring.
2. Seed selection and soaking
Choose lotus seeds that are large, black, plump and hard. Before soaking, the seeds must be nicked by hand: one end of a lotus seed has a small pointed tip, and the other end has a small dimple. Rub the end with the small dimple against rough cement ground until it breaks, or clip a small opening with pliers, being careful not to damage the seed embryo and not to remove the shell.
3. Germination and sowing
Put the treated lotus seeds in water in a sunny place, changing the water morning and evening. Wait until more than 2 floating leaves have unfolded and the roots are longer than 2-3 cm, then put them into a pot and bury them one or two cm below the mud. Then add water, being careful not to make it too deep. Once there are standing leaves, apply some fertilizer; the amount should be controlled according to the fertility of the mud in your pot. After the standing leaves appear, apply only phosphorus and potassium fertilizer to promote flowering, generally monopotassium phosphate.
Later, according to the growth condition, just remove leaves, add water and apply fertilizer as needed.
