2. Main Varieties of Taiwan Pineapple
1. Zailai variety:
Also known as the local pineapple, it is characterized by deep yellow flesh and a rich fragrance, but the fruit is small, the yield is low, the flower cavity is deep, and it has seeds and coarse fibers; this variety is not suitable for canning and was gradually replaced by the Kaiying variety. At present, apart from germplasm preserved at experimental stations, it is rarely cultivated by the public.
2. Kaiying variety:
Also known as the foreign pineapple, after many years of selection and elimination of inferior types by experimental stations, the normal Kaiying variety is the best among them, and it is currently the most widely cultivated variety in the world and the best for processing and canning. Its advantages are large fruit, good fruit shape, no knobby eyes, high yield, few fibers, fine flesh, high sugar content, little sourness, shallow flower cavities, no seeds, few slips, and early ratoon sucker production, but the flesh is light yellow and the fragrance is relatively poor; this variety is more suitable for canning.
3. Hybrid varieties:
Many varieties have been developed by experimental stations through hybrid breeding methods.
