Shandong radishes are produced in Weifang City, Shandong Province. Among Shandong radishes, the Weixian radish is the most famous. The Weixian radish, also known as the Weifang radish, gets its name because it originated in Weixian, Shandong, and has a cultivation history of more than 300 years.

Introduction to the Weixian radish

The Weixian radish, also known as the “tall-stemmed green radish”, grows within the former territory of Weixian. The Weixian radish is sweet, crisp and juicy, with a slight spicy flavor, and contains a large amount of vitamins. It has the functions of promoting the flow of qi, resolving phlegm and aiding digestion. Therefore it is also known as the “fruit radish”.

The Weixian radish has a semi-upright leaf cluster, with pinnately lobed leaves that are deep green and glossy. Its appearance is cylindrical; about two-thirds of the exposed part has dark green skin, while the part in the soil has yellow-white skin. When the radish is cut with a knife, the flesh splits apart crisply wherever the blade enters, and the juice sticks to the hand; it is crisp and sweet in the mouth, and the slightly spicy taste makes the mouth water.

The Weixian radish has a rich and unique local flavor and distinctive regional characteristics, and is a famous, special and high-quality local variety renowned at home and abroad. There has long been a saying that “Yantai apples and Laiyang pears are not as good as Weixian radish skin”, and it is deeply loved by people.

The Weixian radish is rich in nutrients. According to testing, the fleshy root contains 3.0%-3.5% reducing sugar, 6%-7% soluble solids, 300 mg/kg VC, about 7% dry matter, and 260-280 enzyme activity units of amylase, and it also contains calcium, iron and mustard oil, among others.
