Detailed Guide to Kadsura coccinea Propagation Methods, Teaching You to Grow Seedlings with Ease
Kadsura coccinea is a vine plant. Its fruit can be eaten after ripening, and it tastes quite sweet. Many people enjoy eating it now. Kadsura coccinea has not yet been planted on a large scale in our country. What propagation methods does it have?
Kadsura coccinea Propagation Methods
1. Seed propagation
Seedlings grown from sowing have strong root systems and fast growth, but they are also more prone to variation and their quality cannot be guaranteed. After collecting the seeds, place them in wet sand for pile storage to prevent water evaporation from reducing the germination rate. Then sow in spring. Before sowing, apply sufficient base fertilizer to the soil, make beds and shape them, and control the plant and row spacing while opening furrows and digging holes for sowing. Place about two seeds in each sowing hole. After sowing, cover with fine soil, then cover with plastic film to improve the soil's moisture retention capacity. After seedlings emerge, remove the plastic film in time. Thin the seedlings once after three true leaves appear, and set the seedlings after five true leaves. Do one intertillage and weeding operation, and apply topdressing about once a month.
2. Grafting propagation
Grafting propagation is the most commonly used propagation method for Kadsura coccinea. Here, bud grafting is mainly introduced. At about 8 cm above the ground on the rootstock, cut a 3 cm incision, then cut open half of the outer skin of the incision. Cut the bud upward from the bottom to make a bud piece, controlling the length at about 2.5 cm. Then insert the leaf into the incision, tie it tightly, and use a grafting clip to secure it, leaving the leaf bud exposed. After about a week, if the bud piece is fresh and the petiole falls off loosely, it means survival has been achieved. If it has not survived, re-graft in time. After about 2-3 weeks, remove some leaves and vines to promote the growth of the grafted bud.
3. Cutting propagation
In spring each year, cut off robust, disease-free and pest-free one-year-old branches, cut them into cuttings of about 12 cm, with about 4 buds on each cutting, keep one leaf at the top, and cut off excess leaves. Then cut the insertion end into a slanted cut; the larger the wound area, the greater the rooting rate. The cut must be smooth, then soak the cut in rooting agent for about half an hour to improve the rooting rate. After plowing and preparing the seedling land and applying base fertilizer, insert the cuttings obliquely into the seedbed, keep the side buds moist, then compact the soil and water thoroughly to increase the contact area between the cuttings and the soil. Do weed control during the rooting period. After rooting, apply appropriate topdressing, mainly applying more frequently in small amounts, to prevent excessive amounts from causing the death of the cuttings.
The propagation methods of Kadsura coccinea are briefly introduced here. During actual operation, choices still need to be made according to the actual situation.
