Phoebe zhennan (golden silk nanmu) is a precious timber endemic to China, with a unique fragrance, straight grain and fine dense structure, not easily deformed or cracked, making it an excellent timber for construction, high-grade furniture and other uses. So what are the cultivation techniques for Phoebe zhennan?

The seeds of Phoebe zhennan mature around the Minor Snow solar term, when the fruit skin turns from green to blue-black, indicating ripeness. The collected fruits must be processed promptly. The processing method is: place the fruits in a bamboo basket or wooden bucket and pound them to remove the fruit skin, then rinse clean with water, and dry in the shade indoors; never expose to direct sun. Once the water traces have slightly dried, the seeds can be stored. The thousand-grain weight of this tree species' seeds is 20-345 grams, and the nursery germination rate can reach 80%-95%. The seed moisture content is around 30%, and the seeds easily lose water and crack, causing the cotyledons to mold and lose germination ability. Therefore, the processed seeds must immediately be mixed with moist river sand for storage. Around the Beginning of Spring solar term, the seeds begin to germinate in large numbers, and at this point they can be sown.

Phoebe zhennan seedlings grow slowly in the early stage and prefer shade and moisture. It is advisable to choose a nursery site with short sunlight hours, convenient drainage and irrigation, and fertile, moist soil. Heavy clay soil with poor drainage tends to cause root rot; dry soil lacking water leads to poor seedling growth and also easily causes scorching. Before sowing, the nursery site should be given sufficient base fertilizer, and the land should be carefully prepared and beds carefully built. Generally, drilling (row sowing) is used, with row spacing of 15-20 cm, row width of 6-10 cm, and a sowing rate of 20 kg per 667 sq m (1 mu). After sowing, cover with fine yellow subsoil 1-2 cm, then cover with grass to keep the seedbed moist. After the seedlings emerge, timely weed, loosen the soil, fertilize and irrigate. When raising seedlings on flat land, due to long sunlight hours and high surface temperature, they are prone to sunscald damage in hot summer weather, so corn can be sparsely sown in early May to provide appropriate shading. August to October is the fast-growing period for Phoebe zhennan seedlings. During this period, water and fertilizer management in the nursery should be strengthened to accelerate seedling growth and improve seedling quality. In November, some plants are still shooting and growing, so in later nursery management, care should be taken to avoid frost damage to seedlings during overwintering. Using 1-year-old strong seedlings for afforestation gives better results than using 2-year-old seedlings; some thin and weak seedlings can be left in the nursery for 1 more year before afforestation.

Regarding afforestation, in the south it is suitable to carry out in mid-November and from February to April in spring. The afforestation site should be chosen on semi-shady slopes in mountainous areas with deep soil layers, high humus content and relatively high air humidity, at the middle-lower part of the hillside, on both sides of gullies, or on riverside terraces. The planting hole size is 40 cm × 40 cm × 40 cm, with 200 g of compound fertilizer applied per hole, mixed evenly with the topsoil when backfilling. Choose cloudy or light rainy days for afforestation, and appropriately prune the seedlings before planting, cutting off overly long or damaged roots. To keep the roots moist, mud-dip the seedlings as they are lifted, and 3%-5% calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer should be added to the mud slurry. When planting, ensure the seedling roots are spread out, the seedling body is upright, and the planting depth is appropriate.

The wood of Phoebe zhennan is stable in nature. With its pleasant fragrance, it has become a unique precious timber and is also a popular material for bead bracelets, making it quite valuable.
