When is the best time to sow a wildflower mix?
Now more and more people like to grow some flowers and plants at home to decorate their indoor environment, and those with large courtyards also like to plant various wildflowers, such as various chrysanthemums, dandelions, etc. So when should a wildflower mix be sown?
1. When should a wildflower mix be sown?
Wildflower mix seeds are generally sown in the three seasons of spring, summer and autumn, but March to May is the best sowing time. However, the specifics depend on the climate characteristics of your location; if the temperature is low and there is insufficient light, then it is not suitable for sowing.
2. How is a wildflower mix planted?
1. Level the soil
Use a rotary tiller to shallowly turn the ground once, remove weeds and stones, then use a rake to level it. In short, the finer, softer, looser and more level the soil, the better.
2. Mix the seed with river sand
Because the seeds are tiny, it is very difficult to sow them evenly if scattered directly, so the seeds should be mixed with sand for sowing, with one jin of seeds roughly matched with about 8-10 jin of sand.
3. Sow in sections
If the planting area is too large, continuous sowing makes it easy to miss spots or sow unevenly, so it should be divided into small sections for sowing, with each section preferably not exceeding half a mu.
4. Sowing technique
When sowing, you should find a farmer who often works the land and sows seeds. When sowing, divide the seeds that should be sown in each small section into three portions; after one portion is sown, sow the second portion over it again, and after the second portion is sown, sow the third portion over it again. This way it can be sown very evenly. No matter how good someone is at sowing, it is impossible to sow evenly in just one pass.
5. Covering
After the seeds are sown, gently rake back and forth over the ground once with a rake so that all the seeds sink into the soil. The seeds should not be buried deep; because the seeds are tiny, shallow sowing is enough, and no seeds should remain visible on the soil surface.
6. Spraying water
Since the seeds are sown shallowly, they can only be sprayed with water, not irrigated; a large volume of water easily washes the seeds away or onto the soil surface. When spraying, spray in cycles so that the soil is moist and the seeds are not easily exposed on the soil surface. When using a water cart to spray, the water cart is equipped with a nozzle; when using a hose to spray, a nozzle must be installed, and local hardware stores all have them. The spray volume can be adjusted. Because the seeds are sown shallowly, even without sun the soil is easily dried by wind, so before emergence the soil should be kept moist; frequent spraying brings earlier emergence and faster growth.
