How to Plant Cedar Seeds? Detailed Guide to Sowing Methods and Seedling Techniques
Cedar is an evergreen tree that blooms from October to November each year, and its fruit ripens the following year. It is planted all over the world and is mostly propagated by sowing and cuttings. So how do you plant its seeds? Let's find out below.
How to plant cedar seeds?
1. Seed and site selection
Choose high-quality, plump cedar seeds and sow them from March to May and from October to November each year. Cedar has no strict requirements for soil and can be planted in sandy gravel soil, yellow mud, or clay; soil with a high sand content is also no problem. However, the seedling site should be a high-quality field with loose, breathable soil, rich in organic matter, on gentle terrain, and with fast drainage.
2. Land preparation and seed soaking
Before sowing, soak the seeds in warm water for 96 hours. At the same time, apply sufficient farmyard manure to the planting site before planting, broadcasting 5~6T of cow dung and pig manure per mu. After fertilizing, plow deeply once and harrow once, so that the soil and nutrients are fully and evenly mixed together.
3. Sowing
Seeds that have completed germination can be sown directly. When sowing, the thick end of the seed should face upward, and the sowing depth should be kept at about 2 cm. After planting, you can also lay plastic film or moisture-retaining materials such as straw to improve the germination rate. After covering with soil, water once, and it will take roughly 5-10 days.
After that, do a good job with pest and disease control, water and fertilizer application, and other work. During its peak growing season, apply 30 kg of quick-acting fertilizer per mu, and determine watering based on weather conditions.
