How to Grow Black Goji Berry? Detailed Guide to Planting Methods and Techniques
Black goji berry is rich in protein, amino acids and various vitamins, and many people like to buy dried black goji berries to brew as tea. How is black goji berry grown?
How to grow black goji berry
1. First establish an orchard; the plot should be chosen with sufficient sunlight, level ground, and loose, fertile soil that is easy to drain and irrigate. A shelterbelt can be planted. Before planting, deep-plow and prepare the land and apply base fertilizer; this should be done in the autumn of the year before planting.
2. The propagation methods for black goji berry include sowing, cuttings and division.
Seed planting is carried out in late March. Before planting, deep-plow the seedling soil to 25 cm, then open planting furrows or holes at a row spacing of 20 cm, scatter the seeds evenly, cover with fine soil and press firm, and cover the seedbed surface with rice straw to increase temperature and retain moisture.
3. Division propagation is relatively simple among the three propagation methods. Cutting propagation is generally carried out in April and October. Before propagation, select a good plant and take last year's vigorous shoots or branches with plump flower buds, cut them into cuttings of about 12 cm, then insert the cuttings at a row spacing of 20*15 cm, leaving 1/3 exposed, press firm and water.
4. When the black goji berry seedlings grow to 30 cm, carry out intertillage and weeding. This is because intertillage loosens the soil, allows the roots and stems to breathe, and avoids oxygen deficiency. When turning the soil, be careful not to damage the roots.
5. During the seedling stage, apply fertilizer at least three times, each time mainly with urea, and after flowering and fruiting apply phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer twice. Pay attention to the moisture conditions in the orchard; black goji berry is not tolerant of waterlogging, so drain water during consecutive rainy days.
6. When the black goji berry seedlings grow side branches, timely thinning and bud removal are needed; remove all side branches that are too densely grown so as not to hinder the normal growth of the main branches, wipe off the tender buds, and prune the young shoots.
Plants grown from seed can bear fruit in 3 years, while saplings planted can bear fruit in the same year. After the black goji berries mature, harvest them in time.
