Detailed Guide to Propagating ZZ Plant by Leaf Cuttings, Step-by-Step Instructions
The ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is an indoor foliage plant with a green spathe, boat-shaped, and a relatively short spadix. It also symbolizes bringing in wealth and treasure, making it very suitable for growing at home. So how do you propagate a ZZ plant by leaf cuttings?
1. Leaf cutting propagation
The ZZ plant has large tubers, which sprout numerous buds and form many small tubers. Its compound leaves live for 2-3 years or more and are constantly renewed by new leaves. Usually the ZZ plant is propagated by dividing small plantlets with small bulbs produced on the mother tuber. A large plant can produce only 2-5 plantlets per year, so the propagation rate is low and the process is slow.
ZZ plant leaves root easily in a substrate, so they can be used for propagation. Each mature compound leaf has 15-25 leaflets; if used for propagation, this can greatly increase the propagation rate. Cut leaflets of different maturity, or two leaflets with the rachis, or a single leaflet with the rachis, and insert them into a clean river sand bed; they can also be inserted directly into substrates such as peat. When inserting, lay the leaf flat or insert it upright, and keep the sand bed moist after insertion. After 50-60 days, the base of the petiole or rachis swells, and then thick new roots grow out from the side.
2. Main value
Every even-pinnate compound leaf of the ZZ plant has a thick, sturdy leaf axis base, as if it were a raised Buddha's belly. The middle and upper parts of the rachis are cylindrical, with irregular dark brown markings, as if covered with a layer of camouflage. Its oval or ovate leaflets are thick and firm, with a deep green color, and in sunlight they look as if coated with a layer of glittering glaze. If several plants are grown together in an exquisite blue-and-white porcelain pot, they present a vigorous, upward vitality and lush, dripping freshness, with high ornamental value.
Through photosynthesis, it can absorb toxic gases and release oxygen, bringing fresh air. During the day, it can absorb carbon dioxide from the room while releasing oxygen, increasing the concentration of negative ions in the indoor air, and can even take in dust that even a vacuum cleaner finds hard to reach. More importantly, it can also absorb harmful gases such as formaldehyde and benzene series compounds, and kill bacteria in the air. In this process, it effectively purifies the air and increases the green atmosphere in the space, making people feel relaxed and happy.
The ZZ plant has relatively high planting value, good ornamental value, and can also effectively purify the air. It is also very simple to grow and suitable for indoor planting.
